Really enjoying the forum and spent a lot of time yesterday searching and reading up on the posts!! I know I am going to learn a ton!

I was hoping someone could help me decide what products I should get for my Mustang GT. I know that I am a newbie, but I hope someone will spend a little time with me!!

Here is what I have:
2010 Mustang GT - UI color - Brilliant Silver Metallic
Flat black Vinyl stripes - how to clean those? Can I wax them?
Flat black wheels - really have no idea what to clean them with...
Leather seats

I have been using over the counter products like Meguiars and have two coats of Turtle Wax ICE on the car currently. Do I need to somehow take that wax off?

I would love to get a list of things I need - from washing the car, drying, waxing, polishing, interior, etc - the whole thing!!!

Thanks in advance for help!

Here is some pictures of my car to get an idea:

Welcome to AGO! Beautiful mustang you got there. my first question/s is what are your plans for the car and/or your budget of spending on products?

wow it's so new the tires still have the info stickers on em!

nice ride

I dunno about vinyl but you need some clay, a rinseless product (optimum no rinse, detailers pride wash and gloss, or ultima waterless wash concentrate), duragloss 901 shampoo, 2 grit guards, some sheepskin wash pads, a paint cleaner like duragloss 501 or klasse all in one, a sealant and/or wax (collinite 845 springs to mind), and a spray wax for boosting your main lsp (duragloss aquawax)

Good looking Mustang!!!

Two buckets with grit guards, Griots Microfiber pads. Clay, Wolfgang pre-wax Polish Enhancer, Wolfgang 3.0, Dp wheel cleaner. Mother's brushes, wheel, tire and wheel well.

THANKS - All I have been doing is reading on this forum!!

My plans to try to keep it showroom quality as best as I can and time...

budget...hmmm, I want good products!, But I do not think I can spend over $100 on a can of wax at this time! ;)

I need those two buckets!!!

collinite 845 is $15 and sometimes it's on bogo

1. wash (put in some rinseless product for extra protection)
2. clay (use rinseless product as a lube)
3. polish/pre wax cleaner
4. sealant (wait 12 hours)
5. wax

use spray wax as a drying aid and to boost the main wax

Flat stripes need to be protected especially when polishing. Tape them off with 2" painters tape to avoid any of the polish coming in contact with them as it will leave a messy residue.

Since they're Vinyl, they should be fine. If you do want to add some protection the only thing I would try is Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus. This goes on clear and will leave a nice luster behind.

Ultima Tire & Trim Guard Plus is the perfect product for your black wheels as well. You'll be amazed at how nice this product works.

Ultima Paint Guard Plus 4oz., paint sealant, liquid wax, car wax, paint sealer

Autogeek Online is "the" place to learn some of the finest ways to detail your car. There is a wealth of knowledge here for the beginner to the most advanced. A simple question is all that's needed to initiate helpful responses from members here and also Autogeek Professional Staff.

This is something I've posed several times and it covers many areas at a high level but give you an idea of what's available and some of the prices.

Everyone starts off as a beginner but with some reading, questions, and trial, error, and practice you'll be amazed how much you'll be able to do. After reading and understanding some of the basics, the more hands on your are the quicker you'll build your knowledge and gain experience.

This link contains articles written by Mike Phillips and has allot of great reading within.

Articles by Mike Phillips

Basic steps in order are:

  • Wash
  • Clay
  • Paint Correction & Polish
  • Seal
  • Wax
Make detailing enjoyable and practice. Take your time and do not become overwhelmed. Just because there are a thousand product doesn't mean you have to use them all.

Pick one product from each category from the steps above. You already have some great waxes so you're that far ahead of the game..

Autogeek has a kit section that contains everything you need to get started. For starting off I recommend a dual action polisher. These come on a variety of flavors and Autogeek carries most of them so take your time and educate yourself.

The kit pages below will give you an idea of what's available but if you do decide to purchase a Porter Cable 7424 style polisher opt for the 5 1/2" flat pads right off. The 6 1'2" are just too large and this has been confirmed many time over.

WOW - Thanks Bobby! I am going through the list now!

Killer car! that thing would look good even full of mud!
I think Bobby is dead on with his products..and the one thing I would emphasize is the "sealant" step (which to me is often overlooked)..it will give you a layer of protection between your paint and top coat of wax..and most usually last at least 6 months to a year if you let them cure 6-12 hrs. It not only gives extra protection..but makes the car easier to clean in general. And the UTTG product is the best out there regardless of its steep price..a little goes a long way..and you will love the results. Welcome to the AG Forum..it is the best and the people are great as well. The senior members really do a great job of helping us out. Have fun raising "Cane" in your car!

Wow..Cane..you don't mess around! Impressive Car+impressive list=(WINNER)! It only seems an expense at first..but nothing beats a great bunch of "go to" products. You will see that consistent results is what you are striving for. I might suggest one other item to add to your list..the Metro Vac "sidekick"...it is a hand held unit that is great at drying engines, door jambs, wheels, mirrors, windshield cowling area.etc... You will find many other household uses for it..but it works great. Also, the one thing I REALLY learned above all else..is to have GOOD microfiber towels...invest in them and you wont be sorry.

I coulda sworn there were some tweaks added to that list... hmmm

There is some great input from the guys above. Nothing to add but a couple of tools that might have already been mentioned. Get a couple of wheel brushes. One soft for outside areas, and a deep reach for back into the barrel behind spokes.
:iagree: great looking Mustang.

Thanks!

- I have never used this but 3/4 of my mustang buddies swear by it...I never had a chance to use it on mine...I use Leatherique on my Acura

The rest of the stuff looked fine to me...

because the MF kits come with a backing plate, you don't necessarily need to get the 6.5 in kit if you are buying a Griots polisher. I'd go with the 5.5 inch pad kit no matter what polisher you get. The smaller size is more versatile on regular cars imo. If you go with MF discs, then get a bug sponge for cleaning them and a couple 5.5 in crimson hydrotech pads for wax application.

If things are adding up, then get the 5.5 in MF kit, get rid of the Powerfinish, and Powerlock, and add a free sample of Wolfgang Deep Gloss sealant to your order. The sample is enough to do your car about 4 times. It's not like this will be your only order, trust me... :)

Consider Optimum Car wax or Duragloss Aqua Wax instead of the Pinnacle.

I don't like CCS pads (too thick and dimples don't make any sense to me -- less foam on the paint means less correction). I'd also get the shorter cord polisher and just get a good extension cord. I got the HD Griots but find that I still need to use an extension sometimes.
