I need a raise!!! - need input/feedback

Do you have kids? If not, bluff 'em with a letter of resignation. If they call your bluff, frig 'em.

No, no, NO!

Regardless of family situation, do NOT play chicken like that. In today's economy, where companies are piling more and more work in a stagnant or declining head count, finding a new job can take time.

This time acts as a red flag if it is "unemployed time". Besides kids, there is still rent/mortgages that are due.

I have to agree with avoiding this at all costs. Not only is the economy still tough in certain markets and industries, but if this is a smaller marketplace where employers for your particular skill are common in a particular area they could easily reach out to one another for referrals.

A letter of resignation is NOT a bluff. It is a signed document to your employer that you are willfully terminating employment with them. Unless you have a stockpile of money saved up or another means of supporting yourself for an extended period of time, this should never be used as a scare tactic.

Going even deeper into this you also want to avoid "bluffing" about another job offer. This could be catastrophic for future employment in the same industry because whether you like it or not companies in the same industry will ALWAYS reach out to previous employers for advice on the potential of onboarding a new employee. You will shoot yourself in the foot if they find out you lied to try and leverage more money.

I still stand by the decision to find another job, get an offer letter from them, and then bring it back up to your current employer. This way if things go south you have employment elsewhere.
