Illinois Residents Watch Out

Colorado passed a law last year to collect sales tax from online purchases. The difficult thing for us is that some online retailers charge the tax and others don't. So it is up to the individual to keep records of their online purchases and pay at year end tax filings.

For IL to go back to 2004? Wow, there is no way I could even possibly figure that out for what I have purchased. I don't see how this is efficient or traceable. What a lot of time, effort for someone to track it down. I doubt what they would recoup in taxes would offset this program. But, of course with that said, they will probably go forward. hahaha

I think it is stupid. This should just be a warning to people that this law does exist. I had no idea at all. I knew about the brick and mortar law where you get taxed if they have a store in that state. But to think everyone knows all of Illinois's laws is absurd.

Why doesn't the big online retailers like Amazon post that as a warning. Like they do to tell you some states due charge tax on your purchase.

How is this not covered under interstate commerce?

I have also heard about the Brick & Mortar clauses for having to pay tax, but my tax preparer has never mentioned anything like this (though I am not living in IL either).

A huge part of why I buy products online is because you don't have to pay sales tax, though I do realize that with as popular as online shopping has become this benefit is running on borrowed time. I like my roads, schools, police and fire protection and I am willing to pay for the services even if I like to moan about it.

But I agree, going back to 2004 is nuts and will not be very successful.

Illinios might start going after unpaid sales tax from online purchases. I don't know how they would, but they are trying.

They are trying to give a amnesty period for us to pay without penalty before they go after us for purchases between 2004 and 2010..

New York has been doing this for years on their state income tax form. You can either document the actual amount or use their formula based on Adj Gross Inc. Fortunately their formula works out to such a small amount compared to what I actuall spend online.

Alot of the SITES I get stuff from always charge me tax...But as far as ebay or something like that never. I live in Indiana, you guy's get charged tax here right?

If the IRS statute of limitation is only 3 years, I highly doubt IL will be successful going back to 2004. I truly hate this state, but it is not practical for me to move to Missouri at this point.

The Springfield politicians continue their corrupt ways at the expense of the working man!! And the "people" decided to reelect the appointed Governor!! I guess the majority is satisfied with the direction this state is headed!

Mordor is run by the big city on the lake......

I've printed out the article and will give it to my coworkers, the ones with the hopey/changey/unicorn stickers on their cars.

Fair Tax!:awesome:
I agree but politicians will fight to hang onto their taxing power.
Indiana is looking at the same deal as IL.Local paper just had a article with a local camera shop complaining about internet competitors but admitted they also sell on the net to out of state customers.Go figure.

Thanks for the article, rather worrying if you ask me. How do they expect us to go back to 2004 when I can't even keep track of 2010. :nomore: Feed back please

The sales tax in my part of California is 10.25 %

I would move out of the state if they try this BS.

I can see on Amazon, thank god it is only about a $1000. I'll probally just claim the $80 tax and play dumb on the rest. I asked Meghan to erase all my past purchases from their office. I hope they do, I don't need to see how much money I've spent at AG anyway.:xyxthumbs:

They might just do it. They have done it to my records. Of course I didn't ask.
