Hello Everybody!
I thought I was the only one that loved "buffing" that's what we call it. Over here in Los Angeles. However I have learned from you guys, that the word "cutting" "compounding" etc (still learning) are used. I am glad to be part of a forum where I can talk and relate to other people that have the same thoughts that I do. I try to explain to my Gf what "swirl" marks are and she says "oh ok..."
I started when I was 13 my dad asked me if I wanted to go live with him for the summer and go work at the shop that he manages. I said "ok". Basically all I did was wash cars, vacuum, dashboard cleaning, and wash the car. All else we had to do was wax the side that got fixed, wax by hand. It eventually got easy and just became a routine thing.
I then got older moved on and now I am 26. When I was 23 I asked my uncle if I could go work at his shop. He said "ok" I was working as a car washer. Then from time to time they would have us color sand. (it was just work and became a drag) they then were looking for a "buffer" thats what they called it. So I said "i'll do it!" and little by little I started getting good, I did burn paint though (only with the Dewalt). I didn't like to wet sand I like to use the DA and color sand that way.
We used to joke around and say "the painter probably throws sand on the car and then sprays the clear coat" it was a mission having to bring down the fish eyes and the dirt marks! oh my!!!
The shop had a contract with Hertz so we never had to present it to a "customer" so little by little I started looking more into it and started experimenting with it. I would sand with 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 just for fun cos I fell in love with the "mirror finish" and this whole concept and these were just Hertz cars but I took them in like my new little loved ones... (hard to explain)
I then stopped working there and went off and did other things mostly computer work. (i'm good with that also and cooking)
I bought me a Porter Cable 7424XP HD (first time not using an extension cord, I hope I didn't make a mistake) then I found out about Auto Geek and I was "Ahh... what the heck!!! there's other people like me!!!"
This is my first time using a Porter Cable. Before I only used a Dewalt and a Makita. I am hoping I can "buff" with the Porter cable after color sanding. I called customer service and they said yes but I would have to go to 3000. I said great cos I only like color sanding with a DA and they told me that is what the porter cable is a DA. They even said that I will be able to color sand with 1500, 2000 and 2500.
I have only used the Dewalt and Makita but my Porter Cable comes Wed. I hope I can color sand with it so I dont have to go buy a Dewalt till later.
