I'm resisting buying any more detailing products

I have pretty much stopped buying everything I feel like trying now. Took me a few years but I am there. Now I have a to buy list. When I see something that I really want to try, I put it on the list. When I run out of that type of product, I buy the one on the list instead.

That's no fun!

I actually dont think I've bought anything 'substantial' in 2019, the cupboard is somewhat bare. Still a PA Cosmic kit in there but that's about it for coatings.

Still have a few things at work I gotta clear out and bring home, mostly some new polishes/compounds that I gave a try.

As someone mentioned, very few 'game changers' come along. HD One is OK, but not life altering, Megs 210 was OK but nothing monumental vs 205, CarPro ClearCut may be a keeper but can usually get same results with another liquid, albeit with a few more passes.

Beadmaker was good for a little entertainment and even early on I'm pretty sure Mothers CMX wont hold a candle to CanCoat so nothing substantial there.

The Kamikaze wool pad is a keeper but the compounds/polishes seem to be definite 'boutique' items, too pricey for frequent use and maybe too focused towards softer paints.

The Zipang coating looks like a winner *for me*, not so much because of the limited self healing alone but that aspect along with increased claimed longevity will probably allow me to extend my daily out another year w respect to re-do's and my wifes winter car will likely extend out another 2 years with it...which makes the added $$ if it worth it.

Lord knows my CC statements have been looking better lately. I remember adding up all my 'known' purchases at the end of 2017 and, well...let's just say I didnt do that again at the end of 2018.

Seems like a lot of 'new & revolutionary' stuff is incremental changes in most cases...but not all; and it's that last bit 'not all' that will likely keep me chasing Unicorns...but maybe at a slower rate. Hopefully.

Still have a coating or 2 I'm interested in, maybe try when weather warms up in a month or 2 but that's about it. As for 'new to me' things I've tried recently, Scholl S30 is probably a keeper as is Gtechniq C4 Trim coating and Gtechniq G1/G2 glass coating if they prove to be lasting. Very nice that you can get in smaller, 15ml bottles...about 1 cars worth. Very handy.

Will say that falling down this rabbit hole has given a bit more insight into my wifes occasional 'shopping as a hobby'; sometimes it's just plain fun to buy stuff, receive it and give it a go.

Getting kinda lonely on some of those shelves:

Yes. I think this year the one product I am really looking forward to is M110 because I hate M105. I don't know if it will outperform D300 though, all the tests I have seen are great but D300 also has the same characteristics. Maybe M110 will have more cut. When I run out of D300 I will have to check what is the best option out there. Apex detail has been running an extensive testing of compounds so that will be a good place to find the info. Been a while since I watched but many of the compounds were excellent. So as long as it doesn't dust and has good cut and finishes well, there are probably several options one could buy and be happy.

The other game changers would be the two new Optimum products: The one to repair clearcoat and the one to spray a PPF on the car. Opti-shield and Clearcoat repair? Can't remember the name at the top of my head.

I haven’t bought a polish or compound in years because my vehicles simply don’t get marred up in the first place. However, if I bought a new-to-me one in the foreseeable future, I suppose it would need them and then I would probably spring for some.

Then again, I did start this thread 1.5 years ago and, well...that didn't quite go as planned.

How do you keep from marring your paint?

Dont underestimate the impact of polishing. It will absolutely remove built up road film and greatly enhance the gloss.

Don't underestimate Bill D. I remember him under his A4 polishing the exhaust...the part no one will ever see, and no, it's not a show car. I'm confident Bill's cars have no "built up road film".

No no road film. Just good wash practice. I owe that to Accumulator over on Autopia. I stay out of bad weather as much as I can too. ( Thankfully I work from home)

I mean, there's always worse ways to spend $$$...Meth, Heroin, Crack...etc.

lol

When I bought my new truck, I thought about going big with a coating, and all that fun stuff. Then I realized I have a ton of stuff I should use up first.

my friends tell me I need an intervention, for buying too many detailing products. lol

Most people I know just say “what are you gonna buy next?” Or “you can use some of it up on my car!! Harharhar!”

And I’m usually just like:

It has been a wet Winter and Spring. I just opened up a box of detailing stuff I bought around Christmas. I was already swimming in detail sprays and spray waxes before that order, and when I opened the box I realized I had gotten a free sample of McKees Fast Wax. Totally had forgotten about doing that!
