Importance of the word 'detailing' in a business name

I have been having a few up all nights debating on a business name before I, register it, start making business cards, website, etc.

Asking how big of a deal is it to go without the word detailing in the title? In terms of exposure? More so websites, because I am confident I can still eloquently communicate I detail cars on a business card without the word 'detailing' in the business name.

It's extremely important! The general public has no service coordination towards words such as "valet" "paint correction", ect. It will be extremely hard to brand yourself, especially at the start, without a name that clearly defines at least the essence of what you are offering.

Thank you for bringing that up! It's something I have experienced lately lol, but completely escaped me when I was struggling to find a business name.

On that note I have a business name I'm going with :)
 
That's so funny I've been asking myself this same question. I'm getting some nicer cards made and am going after upper middle class (more about that in a post tomorrow), but I'd like a fancier way to say what I do without saying "detailing". It makes me feel like a glorified car washer, which is what I am but I don't think I need to sound like one.
 
I find the upper middle class hard to tap into. I'm not, nor have I been in their demographic. Much less in their circle. Hell, count all of middle class the same. I grew up dirt poor. I'm almost 34 and just got my AAS degrees last month!

And people saying that others don't know what detailing means are both right and wrong. People who don't know what detailing means think they do. You can do one of three things: you can avoid using the word altogether, you can use the misinformed version of the word to your advantage (think under-promise, over-deliver) or you can try to educate your potential customers as to what you think the word means.

One of these choices will be easier than the others. I go with what's behind door number two, because it's a win-win scenario for both my customers and myself. If I miss something, only I or someone else privy to true detailing will have the trained eye to notice. And either way, I quote my price for the job, and when they agree they'll find out that I did more than they were expecting so the buyer's remorse is nullified and they're more likely to refer their friends.

Take my advice with a grain of salt though, because I know jack squat about running a business and don't get me started about my opinions on marketing and salesmen. :)

I used "auto spa" in my name instead of "detailing". I thought it sounded a little classier!
 
Some people don't know what "Detailing" means. I recently had someone ask if that means I pinstripe cars.
 
I have a ford transit connect I have in bold letters we come to you scratch removal on the sides works every time .on the back doors I have bullets I start with leather cleaning polishing etc.Describe what you do keep it simple u can use use you're county name like palm beach auto spa .as far as a web site don't waste your money,take that money and get nice menu cards and describe each package and pricing ,they will have all the info they need .

Do you have a pic? Do you get a lot of people calling about scratches that can't be buffed out? Or are you doing touch up paint scratch repair?

There is no right or wrong answer for this question. It depends on many factors, including the plans you have for the size, scale, and geography of your business.

Having the word in your business name will immediately identify your business as working in this particular niche. But that is potentially only useful if customers have some prior understanding of the term.

It is highly unlikely that someone who does not recognise the word would be sufficiently stimulated or intrigued upon seeing your business name containing "detailing" to initiate contact to find out what you do. You would rely on other parts of your brand to do that. Perhaps a strap-line. Perhaps your website content. etc.

If you plan to get business via word of mouth, you can argue it's entirely irrelevant in the title. If you intend to be found via your website & search engines, utilisation of it as a keyword is really important, and so including it in your title could be important, but having good references to detailing in the website content is probably just as valuable. I say "could" above, as it is highly unlikely that your business would get ranked higher than other sites just because of the word detailing in your business title alone. I'm pretty sure your business would not fail just because you neglected to include "detailing" in the name.

Personally, I wouldn't sweat too much on trying to assess the technicalities of this. I'd spend some time coming up with a brand name I was really comfortable with, and if that so happens to end up with the "d" word in there, then so be it! I like the word, so if I ever set things up I"m pretty sure it would be "f4780y detailing" - now there's a can of worms :)

In there mind it's car care I don't know why I hook them in on that,slogan but almost every car has some sort of minor scuffs or bruises that they remember where so they see my van and we start talking.It always works on dealing with the paint transfer key marks ,branches, overspray etc.The rest of the van explains car care like hand wax ,polishing,leather cleaning etc ,we do cars boats show cars ,planes,use my county name as a company identity like palm beach auto spa .the spa will ring a bell cause they know spa means pampering of something .In the back of van in red bold letters says mobile detailing ,but with that on the same doors explains what I do.
 
Detailing is a service demand ,almost every car need some attention,I think website is a waste of money.You will always get work from referral repeat customer ,and Facebook helps to some degree .if you have to chase to get work there's a problem somehow in my town alone ther is 250000 people ,I don't need a web

That is almost completely wrong. If you are mobile or do not have a retail location, your website is the face of your business. If you do higher end work, higher end clients will want to research into you if they have not been referred. They do that by reading reviews and exploring your website.

Have to disagree also. You have a decent sized market to work out of. I'm currently working in one that's around 30k people. Moving to one that is bigger in a couple weeks, but anyways. Facebook was ESSENTIAL for me getting NEW clients. Yes I got alot from word of mouth but Facebook helped a ton.

And nothing beats being able to advertise in market that your going to be moving to. Just last week a made a post saying I was moving 300 miles away and for everyone to tag anyone they know in the area. 1 week later I had over 100 comments, almost as many shares of my page, over 8k views, almost 100 likes added to my page. All for 30 bucks. I can't see how that isn't valuable.

For the cost burden of a web it deosnt justify 50 people a year seeing it and a low percentage of closing the deal,people want to see you're face you're equipment you're personality,your skills etc.I once spent 8 k on a published magazine that circulated to 50 thousand homes,and I got calls from people who wanted to spend nothing biggest mistake.my wife owns a hair salon a service industry as well,does no web no type of marketing and grosses over 400k a year ,when it comes to specialized personal service needs people want to meet you cause in this day in age you never gonna know what u get knocking on you're door .yellow book is also a waste for 40 dollars a month ur just mixed in with 400 other retailers .do good work and word of mouth works best might be a little longer but with zero cost.keep you're image nice such as bottles in van all cordinated clean truck ,when someone pulls up and sees that they want service.you can't provide that image on the Internet ,u can fancy it up but at the end of the day people want to meet you before u close the sale.so save the 1500 or whatever and get really nice post card glossy menu that describes you're service and pricing ,and you can't give a estimate over the web cause people will say there car is not in bad shape,Then u get there it's a bomb I like to see the car ,read the customers expectations and other scenario. some businesses need a web like a plumber or Sheetrock guy electrical contractors cause they are always looking for work the repeat is not there it's a one time deal .
