So I've got a shop where I do all my work. I've started to get lots if business. 2 dealerships want to use me for all their trade ins and used cars.
1 problem.. they require me to have insurance that covers their vehicle the moment I take possession of it. (Understandable). The thing is j have no clue what type of insurance I need where to get it how much it'll cost or anything.

So does anyone have any info on this? What type of insurance to get how much should it cover who offers it and about how much will it cost me?

Your going to need a garage keepers and general liability policy.

Contact some of your local insurance company's. Explain what your looking for and they should be able to get you insurance quotes.

I pay $1,700 a year for my policies.

I've gotten a few quotes and they all seem a bit to high.. they all are around 2k a year and $3 to $400 down payment does that sound right?
And should they need my drivers license info for it?

I pay $30 a month for my garage keeper insurance from state farm. Look at the link I posted above.

that seems high mines only $360 a year.

Is there any way u could tell me exactly what your policy is? That way I can tell the agent exactly what I want so I'm not being juked into any extra. Also did they need to use your driving record?

That I'm not sure of but I have had perfect driving record for 12 years lol. If your drive record could raise your prices if its bad since you will be driving customers cars.

That may b it. But from 4 quotes only 1 ask for my drivers license

I wonder if the extra cost is because of commercial transport ?? None of the vehicles from the dealership carry comp or UM, so the only coverage is the hired auto coverage of their commercial liability...

What would happen if you get into an accident transporting a car back to your shop, which has no private coverage and with commercial coverage only covering "employees"?

Don't flame me if I'm wrong... I'm not 100% knowledgeable in the commercial insurance stuff of car dealership.

Sounds about right. I assume we're talking $1m in GL coverage along with garage keepers insurance?

and don't be surprised if they require a central burgular alarm. And they might not tell you until after the policy is purchased. Can't imagine how I know that

liberty agency underwriters liberty mutual group 2,000,000 cars boats rvs and my shop 530.00 a year . was paying 2800.00 a year till I got these guys 877 538 1920

Thanks for the number..
The quotes were all around $1250 a year with a 300k protection from the moment the vehicle is in my control to the moment it is back where it belongs..
The clincher is I just found out my dl is suspended. And I don't have nearly the money needed to get it back. 5k!!!!
So with my wife's mane being on the business I'm thinking I can get it using her to do transportation.
I can get the garage insurance no prob but that's not enough because that only covers the car at the shop that's it not in transport.

So I have a guy (friend) sells insurance coming tomorrow knows the situation and says he can get it figured out so I shouf be insured by tomorrow.

But for today!! My first day as a licensed operating detail shop!
and THE ONLY LICENSED DETAILER in my area!!!
Potential?? What do u think?

Congrats man - insurance is needed to move forward beyond a single man operation IMO. We weren't insured until a rental car company required it - and they now provide 10 fold a month over what we pay in insurance (which is higher than most mentioned on here oddly). One of our large clients asked me if we were insured 3 years after detailing for them, and they would have dropped us if we couldn't produce proof - not due to quality, but due to the fact that their insurance company required all subcontractors to carry insurance. You made a good move in getting insured and have opened up many doors that the non insured will not see :dblthumb2:

Why was you drivers license suspended? I'll wouldn't tell your customers that cause I would trust you to drive my car. Not trying to be mean.

O no.. I never would tell them that.. it was suspended because of a few tickets 1 driving while expired and no tag (even though it was a new car) also no inspection sticker. I completely forgot about the tickets at the time was going through a lot including breaking my back. Then while in the hospitle I collected several parking tickets in a haze of pain meds forgot all about those as well then went to DMV today to see about it after insurance agent said it wasn't valid and got a ticket AT THE DMV! For driving with no license or insurance. What crap!
