Interest in cars with the younger generation, what happened?

Whatever happened to that car
Sold it, paid off 2 credit cards and bought my 2000 Contour SVT. I then started the whole process over again but had 1 car to do everything instead of a toy.

You got rid of a 1987 Grand National for a Ford Contour? lol. Dude..

This is the day I sold it, spring of 2005. Had a lot of custom parts because there was very little aftermarket support. See those quad projector headlights...custom! Had HIDs when they weren't cheap either. The wheels were 17" BBS RX's too. Mercury Mystique tails and center reflector because it had a thin, chrome strip on the bottom wrapped in matte black. I could go on and on here, really made the car stand out

Not bad at the time eh? How much do you think that same car would be worth 18yrs. later? If it was for sale today?

About $20k

Hmm... Makes me think of back in the days when I would tell my best friend who's into cars as much as I am to go halves on something like 67-69 Eldorado. Back then we would see them in the Old Car Trader in good shape for only $4500-$5000 tops. Those same cars are now $15,000+

We had a place to store it and everything... Dangit why did my friend have to be so frugal? Lol.

These last couple posts is exactly what's missing with the younger generation...passion for a mark. Inexpensive, unique cars are out there, just have to look.

As for the rock music, well I can explain that. I grew up in a poor very ghetto neighborhood so I didn't grow up on rock music, I grew up on rap music. A lot of the music is where you grew up I think. When we played basketball as kids, it was always someone who had a stereo with loud rap music blasting so it's something that I listen to now.

Agree 100% Roger.

FM "Classic rock" stations all over seem like they have 45-50 songs they play, and that's it.

I'm 47 like you, and I was tired of these stations back in 1990. Lol

This is exactly why I don't listen to terrestrial or satellite radio. Haven't for over four years now. Between podcasts and Spotify, I'm perfectly happy with setting up my own play lists and listening without the relentless blathering DJ's or endless strings of commercials where you get two songs followed by 15 minutes of yammering.

Read this with interest as I have one in college and three teenagers at home. The college kid has no interest in cars or driving. The 17 yo is a good driver. It's not his first priority and he doesn't have his license yet. Should have in the next month or two. He has an interest in cars, but all his wants to talk about are "Lambos" and Ferraris so he's unrealistic. No interest in maintenance.

Watching these kids grow up I have to disagree with a lot of what's been said here about jobs and insurance cost. Insurance was about the same when I was 18 (accounting for inflation), so I rode my bike. We have a friend who is a grocery store manager. Pretty much handed my 17 yo a job there. He wouldn't take it. Somehow below him to bag groceries.

So while things are tough, jobs are out there. Given inflation and wages, insurance isn't that much more than it was 30 years ago. There may be less opportunity. I know this makes me sound old and cranky, but what I'm largely not seeing is a work ethic combined with an obsession with electronic devices that overrides everything else.

At my work, a lot of the younger people don't show up on time, they don't want to work hard and they just want to sit around doing nothing. I'm their supervisor and I'm not that much older than them. When I was younger, the military straightened me out but now a lot of the kids I see.. they want the Lambo but they want someone to hand it to them.

At 19 or 20 I desperately needed a cheap car, but I wanted something "cool" as well. After a lot of searching I found a 70-something Capri with a 1600cc engine for next to nothing. Loved that car. Could wrench that thing like crazy and it was fun to drive.

(Bonus that there's a series Land Rover in the pic next to the Capri.)

No offense to him, but how the heck would he know? That's like asking a 15yr. old what's the deal with parents these days? Do you really think you're going to get the correct answer from them? No way.. We can give our opinions, but in reality we're not in their shoes the same way they're not in ours.

With that being said, it's my opinion that todays youth feels entitled and doesn't go through anywhere near the struggle that my generation went through in teenage years.

I rode the bus to many jobs and saved my hard earned money to buy every single car I've ever owned without a cent of assistance to pay for them. I never even asked for anyone to co sign for me. I went out and built my own good credit!

On the other hand, my little brother 10yrs. younger had the convenience of his parents co signing and paying for his insurance on a freaking $20,000 Cadillac for his 1st car. Unbelievable!

I strongly advised him against buying a car like this for his 1st car but he didn't listen. Spoiled kids these days. You gotta be kidding me...

Btw he treats that car like it's near worthless these days. I'm the only reason it ever gets washed. Smh.

Interesting to hear your thoughts. My kids are very close to the same age, but the results are reversed. I have two girls.

My oldest, is wrapping up her final year of post-grad work and she has always been my car fan. She doesn't have the sickness like I do, but she occasionally helps with light detailing work and goes with me to the auto show and Cars and Coffee. We've also raced karts a couple times. The youngest one has no interest in cars, but REALLY wants to drive because the independence she will gain. However, the act of driving scares her, so learning to drive has been a slow process. Her friends also want to drive for the same reasons, but none of them know the difference between a golf cart and a Porsche 911, and frankly could care less as long as it gets them to where they want to go.

We've moderated electronics access over time, so they aren't as addicted as their peers, but their friends are a whole different story...
