Interesting future automotive coating

I doubt it will perform as claimed... rain showers eliminating the need for a true wash? Doubtful.

Sounds sort of similar to Cquartz which also has self cleaning properties due to the nano-structured polymers. I wonder what is different about the coating they are describing in the article?

Maybe it will eliminate the need to wash a car, but how about waxing a car? ;)

Will it always go back to the high shine that we all love here at AG?

neverwet is a better idea i think, not yet in automotive applications though (not sold to the general public yet). Its a nanotechnology that is anti wetting, anti icing, anti corrosion, anti bacteria, and self cleaning

It's the end as we know it!!! AHHH DUM DUM DUM!! Im the MAN:joking:

I feel like at some point in the not so distant future, detailing will be a thing of the past..

It's fun for us, but for most, it's a regular chore that doesn't contribute to any of our natural goals as people. :sigh:

The interesting bit about this is the fact that it is able, to some extent, to self-repair the nano-layer that creates the hydrophobic surface. Because of their structure, these "nano-fingers" tend to get damaged fairly easily, rendering the coating less effective; being able to repair itself would be a huge step in getting a durable commercial product out into the market.

Great points!
