Hello everyone. My name is Jimmie. Have been coming to Autogeek almost daily since June. Just recently joined Forum. Love reading what you guys have to say about products (Best job; best bang for the buck; etc.). Detail my autos constantly, but it's taken almost six months to work down my supply of local retail store stuff. Looking forward to placing my first of many orders. Would really like feedback on best products to start each phase of detailing. One thing that I get from hearing you guys is that much of it is personal preference so I know that it will take some experimenting. Still have a lot of questions. For example: First auto shampoo. I believe that you get what you pay. Pinnacle is a little more expensive. Love the smell of coconut. But, reading about the DP it looks like almost the same product, and one of the testamonials says the smell is to die for. Help? Anxious to get started..

Welcome Jimmie! My go to car wash is Duragloss Car Wash. Sudds alot, nice smell, reasonably priced, and it feels like it lubricates well. Oh yeah get ya some Schmitt!!

Thanks Russecu. Will look up "Duragloss", and probably go with it as my first shampoo. Smitt too. Looking for starter ideas for tires; wheels; dashboard; leather seats; exterior paint ( currently doing one car with sealant; the other with carnuba paste ). The only thing that I'm sure of is that I will stay with "Stoner Invisible Glass" for windows. Much success. Jimmie

Heres what I am currently using or have heard lots of good results from:

Looking for starter ideas for tires: I am using OTC items now and trying to use them up before I get some DP, Pinnacle, or Poorboys Protectant; wheels DP Wheel Gel for cleaning and top with DP wheel sealant and you shoudl only have to use soap and water after a good cleaning and sealing; dashboard: I use 303 areospace protectant leaves a new look to me; leather seats: Pinnacle Leather Cleaner then Leather Conditioner I use Duragloss Leather Cleaner then Duragloss Leather Conditioner and love it; exterior paint: What color cars do you have? ( currently doing one car with sealant; the other with carnuba paste ). The only thing that I'm sure of is that I will stay with "Stoner Invisible Glass" for windows.I agree Much success. Jimmie

It is all a personal preference. I have a lot of products that have worked for me. Have spent a lot of money coming to that conclusion. It does not matter if it is Duragloss, Pinnacle, Zaino, Mequiar's, or Poorboy's. Each one has something to offer. I did the individual products to mix and match a detail. As I have become a better detailer I have started to use the entire line of products from what ever company that I choose to see if all the products work in conjunction with each other.

For an example. Poorboy's make a very good swirl removers, polish, sealant and wax. When I do an area I use the whole product line from start to finish. This not to say that I only use one product line. I have three or four different products on my truck all the time but I do try to get to know the entire line of each product.

IF you are just starting out it would be my suggestion to purchase the product line of your choice and get to know the good and bad of that product line. It will save you money, it will give a shiney vehicle, and it will make you a better detailer.

Yet, you can go ahead and purchase them all. Run up your credit card bill and become frustrated when someone comes out with a new flavor of the month that is the best thing ever, as I did a few years ago.

Welcome Jimmie. I'm glad you decided to join the forums. The duragloss is a great wash soap and smells like cherries. The DP xtreme foam soap smells like mint bubblegum and it has great lubricity. Poorboy's super slick suds also has great cleaning and lubricity and it smells like oranges and peaches or some fruit I can't quite place it. You can't go wrong with any of these wash soaps. :)

I find certain washes work best on different LSP's:

sealants --- Duragloss, Poorboys, Zaino, and UPP Wash

carnaubas --- Pinnacle, Poorboys

I just used one of just about everything DP makes today on an Escalade (I'll be posting the pics and write tomorrow). I'll tell you just one thing. Everything is awesome! Totally blown away by the cleaners.....man the Krystal Vision window cleaner is amazing. The carpet cleaner works so well. Better than Woolite. Everything smells great and is water soluable. They were easy on my hands too. I can't wait to show all of you and do the write up.

You'd be happy with the DP line. It's all I'm gonna use in my business from now own!

First and foremost the best investment you can make to keep your vehicle looking great and hold some resale value is investing in a Porter Cable Dual Action Polisher. It is also sold under the badges of 7336 / 7336SP, and finally the most popular 7424 which is available for purchase right here on autogeek. Great way to take advantage of that 10% off code!

Forgive me, Im just going to reiterate some things maybe but here it goes:

Washing/Drying:
I CANNOT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH HOW
important proper washing and drying is to maintain a swirl free finish.
For this, you want a proper wash mitt and drying towel. For a washmit, I recommend the Schmitt. It is a soft foam with a scrubber for lower areas. It can be machine washed, and many members here have nothing but great things to say about, me personally it’s the best wash mitt ever made.

And for drying look at the Cobra Guzzler! By far, the best drying towel I have set eyes on. It is 28" x 54" and will dry your beautiful vehicle streak free every time. I suggest grabbing one for your big truck! This will help prevent water spots by sucking up the water effectively and completely.

Wax and Sealants:
Now there is a difference here. Waxes are pastes and liquids consisting of either a Carnauba base [natural wax] or a synthetic polymer base [synthetic]. Waxes tend to give the best look of depth and shimmering out of the two, but do not last that long as far as protection is concerned.

This is why a lot of people use both! Sealants form a hard layer on your clear coat to protect your paint. They give a more reflective look to your paint and a very wet look. How do you combine these great elements you ask? Well you use them both. I prefer to lay down a layer of sealant, let it cure for a while and then put a layer of my favorite Carnauba wax on there.

My suggestions for waxes are either DP Maxwax or Nattys Blue or Nattys Blue depending on if your car is a darker hue [nattys blue, or lighter [paste] . All 3 are at a great price point and will give you great results. For sealants, look at the Duragloss #105 topped with Duragloss Aquawax. A truly BRILIANT look for a synthetic sealant!

Polishing:
As far as polishing goes, the Porter Cable 7424 is a great tool. While similar to many orbital polishers, it is more powerful than most around. The PC can do astounding corrective work once trained up on it and it a good investment. I suggest you look at the videos on this page as they might help you assess the damage and what polishes you will need on your beauty. http://autogeek.net/xmt.html , http://paintcare-n-detailing.com/video/

As far as pad choices go, I know the price is a little steep for the whole set, but go for the full set of Edge2k pads. They are double sided, so basically 2 in one on each pad. This kit gives you some pad care products, the pads, and buffing bonnets to take off waxes, along with the edge adapter. An EXCELLENT deal! http://autogeek.net/foam-polishing-kit.html

Welcome to car OCD, and we hope you enjoy your ride! Don’t be shy to PM any one of out members for some help if you need it!

Polishes: Optimum Polish, Optimum Compound, no dusting, great lubrication, great results,

[FONT=&quot]Pinnacle XMT : XMT 1 / 2 / 3 in order of abrasiveness from least [1] to greatest [3]. Minimum to no dusting, leaves a brilliant finish, and they are formulated FOR the PC. [/FONT]

Hi Jimmie,

Welcome, this is definitely a very resourceful place. People here are great and don’t be shy to ask for help. Seriously, there is no silly question. Trust me because I lost count on how many silly questions I have asked and still keep asking. The experienced members will help you out as much as possible.

I just placed my ordered and it took me about two months of reading and re-searching, now comes the fun part. Applying all that I have read and feed back that I have received. The members here are very helpful. I wish I could say you can count on my help but you and I are on the same boat, I’m just about to do my first serious detail.

Oh...there are many experienced members here but if I may suggest keeping your eye on this one "justin30513". He does phenomenal work, and his write ups are well done. The best part is that he uses a variety of products. I found that his write ups and feed back helped me out greatly. On that note, I don’t mean any disrespect o any other members, so please don’t think that I'm putting any one down.

Introduction Jimmie

Really appreciate you guys taking the time to respond to my questions. You probably underestimate the power of your your knowledge and experience, but I heard every word that you said. Thanks to Russecu; Cwcad; Florida Native; Killerwheels: Justin30513; Ryandamartini. Will probabably take Justin's recommendation to go all DP for starters. Cwcad said it would have been more cost effective for him in the beginning to stay with each line ( all products in that line ) as you experiment. I'll do that. Makes since when tied to your experiences. Still looking for best bang for the buck and for that reason will still go with Russecu on first order of shampoo and Shmitt. Thanks again.Jimmie
