I am am member on numerous forums and have been reading a lot recently about detailers doing an IPA wipedown of the vehicle after polishing or 'jewelling'. How necessary is this step? Most products are compatible with one another, so it seems redundant to me. Am I incorrect in my thinking? Some clarification would be useful.

Thanks,

Lee

The reason i do an IPA wipedown between steps it removes any fillers and oils that may have been left behind while polishing. It doesn't really take that long to do.And gives you a better idea if your accomplishing a swirl free finish.

I realise I'm sort of thread-jacking but what products do you use for an IPA wipedown? :hijacked:

Like Harleyguy has said it is to remove polish that is left behind and gives you a true reading of the finish. You will be surprised how much is filled during a polishing. You should add it to your polishing steps.

Thanks all, I only do this as a hobby to keep the family cars in good order. I will certainly add this as I doing my wife's Camry this week.

Lee

Do you dilute the IPA with distilled water and if so at what ratio? Where do you buy your IPA and is it already diluted to some percentage?

IPA 50/50 so 50% Isopropyl Alcohol(100%alcohol) 50% Distilled Water. Check the percentage of Alcohol it when you buy it. If its 100% or 99.7 then you would do 50/50. If its 70% alcohol which i have seen already, then in order to get a 50% alochol /50% distilled water mixture then you would for example mix (in a 1000ml spray bottle) 700ml's of the IP that you bought with 300ml's water.
overall I think its a good step in the polishing process.

You'll find different dilutions at different stores. Some stores sell various dilutions. I believe CVS sells 91% IPA, I would dilute that 50/50, and they sell 50% IPA which would basically just be ready to use.

Either way, I just buy 91% IPA from CVS and use that straight. Diluting it 50/50 would work fine, that just stretches your money further. But $3 for 32oz, I can't complain since I only reach for my IPA bottle once every other month or so.

Use the 91% straight. The 50/50 mix sometimes does not remove all the residue.

It is the cheapest thing we buy when it comes to detailing LOL
