I've been scrimping and saving for a year waiting for the iPad-3 to come out. So I'm going to preorder one. With my pain and insomnia I don't sleep and I've ruined my eyesight by doing these forums for a year on the iPhone. My question is, is it worth getting 3-4G connectivity , or with having WIFI in the house and so many hotspots out there is just WIFI enough? The price difference is $129 plus another $25 a month. Thanks for any feedback. Spiney-Dave

If you are out and about, then yes, 4g is amazing. Make sure you go Verizon, because AT&T LTE is basically non-existant, and HSPA+ on AT&T isn't much better then 3g, if at all; Verizon LTE or WIFI. Proof? AT&T's website says they have reached 28 cities, whereas Verizon is up to 196, and is expanding faster than AT&T. So if you are getting an AT&T one, you are basically just getting an iPad 2 with a better screen....

I don't mean to knock AT&T, but just stating the facts; something many people aren't aware of. Personally, I own an WIFI iPad2 and love it, but if I had the money to spend right now, I would sell it, and get a Verizon LTE iPad. Unfortunately the car requires some attention right now :)

Sooner or later you'll need 3-4G, so if you can - get it.

Can't you tether it to you iPhone when you are out and about? Not sure it would be as fast, but it should still work.

If you already have a smart phone with 3g/4g I'd suggest WiFi may be all you need on the iPad. WiFi is so readily available nearly everywhere these days I hardly ever need to drop down to 3g/4g. I'm surprised when an establishment doesn't offer free WiFi. My next iPad will be WiFi only and if I can't find a WiFi spot I'll just use my iPhone.

As the owner of an iPad 2 with Wifi+3G, I cannot stress enough how much I would have regretted saving $129 after paying such a high price for the device itself and foregoing 3G.

While WiFi is in *many* places, there are times when (as a non iPhone user) I want to get online either for myself or my kids. 3G is my enabler. Examples of places often not having WiFi and you have a lot of time on your hands:

Train rides (few in the US have Wifi - those that do, charge fees)
Car rides - need a map and don't have a GPS >> iPad to the rescue!
Waiting rooms
Automotive repair shops (waiting areas, etc.)
Businesses (visitors to many non-retail institutions do not have access to free Wifi - iPad with 3G keeps my personal world connected on a big screen)
Visiting older relatives who think WiFi is a new vegetable.

Here's how I looked at it...

If you get the 3G feature, you have the option to use it or not.

If you don't get the 3G feature... you don't have the option...

I chose to get it with mine and I don't regret it.

As an Ipad2 owner with 3g on my device I completelty agree with the above

I felt the same way as Mike so I got mine with the 3G ability. In 3 years, I have only used the 3G once. It's a recurring monthly fee to keep it available starting at $20 a month, but you can subscribe when you need it for a month at a time and then cancel it.

Very usefull if on a road trip, long train ride, want to use it out on a boat or somewhere else without wi-fi. Me personaly I tend to fly anywhere I go, always free wi-fi in the airport or any hotel I stay at so like I say I have only used it once. I will not get it again when I upgrade to the Ipad 3, especially since I already have an Iphone, but if I took a lot of road trips or spent alot of time in places without wifi I would have a different opinion.

.

I am an independent contractor and add the $20 to my monthly telecomm expense write off.

I like options and agree with this 1000%.

I agree with everyone saying that if you get the 3G version you then have the option of taking it with you...

Can you turn the 3G on and off on a monthly basis say to use it for vacation or business, and then turn it off when you are done to save the extra monthly cost?

But, as of yet I have not had the need or desire to take and use my IPAD away from my wifi at home. Maybe I am just different but I have been making a conscience effort to discount and spend quality time in the real world and offline.

everyone has different needs you have to make the choice for yourself... I have a Wifi only version and I love it...if I need to get to the internet on the go and there is no wifi then I pull out my iPhone

I have an I Pad 1, loaded, 65, ordering the 3 32k just wi fi.

Never used 3g, had it in Europe, China Panama, all free at hotel Mc Dees, same for US travel.

Wi Fi will be free even more in the future.

It is a business write off, but I own the business,

Yes, at least with Verizon in NY.

I commute to NYC from Long Island every day and prefer to fall into my own world with my iPad and tune everyone else out. In contrast, I am only on my iPad if alone or everyone else is asleep....because they come first.

Ditto - I have been working on cutting back on my "digital life" (sure I'm online right now but AGO doesn't count) and enjoy the real world more. Now if I can get my wife put the phone, iPad, and computer down too we will really be getting somewhere.

Sorry if I came off sounding "High and mighty". That was not my intention at all.

I can definitely see that if I had a commute like your how the 4G would come in very handy. Like others have said: If you get it you have the option; If not your S.O.L.

After chasing the Ipad2 last year and not getting one, I decided to preorder on March 7th - the day they intro'd the 3rd Gen. Apple has informed me that my Ipad has been shipped and will be delivered by COB Friday, March 16. I can't wait.

I went with the 64g with 4G ATT. Gives me the most options especially if I travel with it.

Just DO IT!

Now the question is should I Opti-Seal it before I use my new Ipad3? Should I seal the glass too?

No worries. Tx.
