Iron- X

I'm actually getting use to it now. Been smelling it to much. Now i look forward to the smell cause that tells me that it works.

It isn't actually bisulphate but it is the ingredient you are meaning to refer to which causes the smell. The smell is of mercaptans, sulfurous in nature. The thing that sparks me to comment is that all of these products are quite harmful (IX has a harmful classification) and they are skin sensitisers (above just 1% active, EU regulations would indicate the need for an irritant classification). IX is classified properly, but there are products out there which claim to compete with IX but mysteriously have no hazard warnings at all. So beware, if your smelly iron remover has no hazard symbol, it either has to have low levels such that it doesn't get classified or it has been classified incorrectly.

I have read your posts on this and other forums for awhile and find you to be a very knowledgeable authority when it comes to chemicals. I work in a field that is chemistry intensive as well and know all about the hazards associated with some of them. I have never read the MSDS on Iron X, so i don't know exactly what is in it but are there any inhalation concerns?

I'm actually amazed sometimes at the chemicals in detailing supplies and how innocent they are portrayed. I have to protect my workers and report to the EPA on an annual basis those same chemicals......yeah I'm looking at you Meg's Wheel Brightener.

Oh yeah, Iron X smells like butt. I'd be embarrassed to bring a pretty girl around it.

No, she did, cuz I'm a geek... an AutoGeek!!

Thanks, I'll be here all week!

Yup, inhalation is bad. The primary toxicity is via ingestion and inhalation is a logical corollary. The smell isn't going to do a whole lot of harm (assuming you don't spend the day smelling it!) but breathing in the spray would be a particularly bad idea. Beyond the fact that it will be harmful, it is a skin sensitiser so will obviously provide the potential for irritation of your respiratory pathways.

All that said, as you will well appreciate, it is important to take the hazard in context. Inhalation and ingestion should not really be a hazard if the user is sensible enough to spray away from themselves. Also it is worth noting that acid alternatives to IX tend to have similar toxicity - Oxalic acid, for instance, would have similar risk for inhalation/ingestion.

I didn't know about that Hazcat. I have one of the blue T-Handled brushes and it fits the lugs on all three of the Hondas I detailed recently. Then again, they all had factory wheels...
That's great. I'm sure they fit a few perfectly. I'd rather own one that fits all. It doesn't fit a Toyota Prius or a Chevrolet Z71 or a Mazda 5, or a .... I finally gave up trying to find one it fit. If someone want's their Honda detailed I might have to pull it out and see how it works. Maybe I can sell it to them. I do have a friend who comes over and details his own car when it needs more than just a wash at his home. Hmmmm . . . you gave me an idea. It's good to free up some money to purchase something else I can actually use. Thanks and I'm glad it works well on your Hondas I truly am!

I really like the woolie brush that fits all and slips right around the lug deep into the hole. I give is a twirl and move the the next. Not foam pads to wear out either. I've done hundreds of vehicles with it and it hasn't lost single boars hair up to this point that I know of so it's sturdy too. I guess it's one persons recommendation who owns a couple of options and feel strongly which is the best tool to spend your money on.

I'll have to give that one a shot. Thanks!!

Make sure you post back what you think about it. I believe you'll be able to solidify my opinion and save some people some frustration and that's what we're here for....to help each other out.
