Is Anyone Else Tired of All the Ceramic Pile-Ons?

I don't know about anyone else but, I'm so completely exhausted with the whole ceramic era of detailing. Coatings, hybrids, infused this and that... Enough already! I'll be glad when the next big breakthrough hits.
I guess I'm just venting but, it can't just be me.

I have yet to buy any ceramic product and yeah, I’m a little tired of hearing about them.

If it didn't work, they wouldn't make it. The next big hype will be graphene. You will see this in not only detailing supplies, but in paints, phones, lighting etc. etc..

Most detailing products are just marketing and hype, and those that have been doing this for a long time know this well. There are a small number of products that work as advertised without any gimmicks.

As far as ceramic products, yeah it's saturated, but they are marketed for the regular guy out there and not so much for the professional detailer, who you would assume would see beyond the hype. To this day I still have clients asking me about this 'ceramic coating' thing they've heard about, so the market is still out there.

Just to chime in,

First - some if not many of these products are the real-deal. That's why you see so much buzz.

Second - I use and like a few of the ceramic products on the AG store and really like them and that's because they do what they are advertised to do.

Third - I tell a little joke in my classes and in general when talking shop in person, it goes like this,

In the time it takes me to turn in a circle, there's a new ceramic paint coating on the market

While that's an exaggeration, and because of my artificial leg I don't turn in a circle as fast as most of you can do, (think Hokey Pokey), it's funny because all good humor is based in truth. And the truth of the matter is there are lot of new products being introduced all the time.

I have people contact me often because they see me as the face or contact person for Autogeek. They contact me and tell me about their new paint coating, (usually), and then ask,

What do I need to do to get this into the Autogeek.net store?

That's when I tell them the normal canned response I've been asked to share for situations like these,

Thank you for your inquiry. Please send your info to

[email protected]

Your information will be routed to the correct department and if there is any interest in your product you will be contacted.

Sincerely,

Mike Phillips

But just to provide some balanced perspective,

It used to be we complained because there were so few choices in car care products, now we complain because there are so many....

Here is the way I started to look at things:

Despite the fact that the word “ceramic” simply means an inorganic material, it is truly a buzz word in the industry right now. Originally I was annoyed by it, but the reality is that it is helping to push things forward in our industry.

This is especially true if you are detailing professionally. It’s created SUCH an awareness now that it is attributing to the success of detailers doing this for money. And I have been finding myself in the position to promote and sell more coating jobs because of it.

I completely understand you are referring to the plethora of SIO2 products recently released otherwise...

I had a woman contact me because the dealership told her to get a ceramic coating. But she’s rather have it installed by a professional detailer. But I’ll stop there.

“Ceramic” has momentum right now. So why stop it. We know there will always be the latest and greatest.

I did the ceramic coatings and IMO there is a market for it. That being said, I went back to a great Carnuba Wax. My most recent wax is Pinnacle Black Label Reserve. I must say IMO nothing beats the wet look, depth and brilliance of a great carnuba wax. AGAIN, that IMO!!!! Additionally, I am a WAX SNOB so wax it is.

I have 3 favorite paste waxes: 1. Pinnacle Black Label Reserve Wax 2. Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax 3. Brand not supported by AGO so will not name it.

As for liquid waxes: Anything Polish Angel.

The WAX SNOB has SPOKEN!....LOL

Quite honestly, I PREFER carnauba wax over ceramic coatings.

So am I. Still using carnauba and sealants.

That will likely be the next LSP I will try.

It can be very confusing with the amount of products, I can’t imagine what the average car owner thinks when they start looking into them.

I have not jumped into the ceramic market. I don’t detail for profit, yet. I have been tossing around the idea for side work once my daughter is in school. But I still enjoy the process and results I get with sealants and waxes.

As Mike says, “find something you like and use it often.” :)

Hmm. I can’t seem to find that one here or on the McKee’s site....

I currently take care of 7 family cars (4 belong to my wife and I). There is a place for ceramic (SiO2 lsp) and sealant/wax. Two of the distant family cars and my wife’s car are ceramic coated ( with products from AG) and the others are sealant/waxed ( products from AG) As they are located closer to where I live for easier upkeep; thus the variety keeps me happy. And besides I do like trying new innovative products (most likely the 35 years of being a scientist and always experimenting), but I still like sealants and wax.

Yes ceramic sells so every player will come out with a line. Coatings are a different level. No wax, sealant l, or “ceramic” spray will compare. The coating may change but it’s here to stay.

As for the sprays go, from what I can tell is their mostly just sealants with 5-10% silica. That being said I can’t find a sealant or wax that come near the protection or self cleaning of PA Cosmic. Looks pretty good too.
