Is it smart for me to spend 1800 on a 3 weekend course on detailing?

If you want to go into detailing full time as a career then compared to college or trade school $1800 is a very inexpensive fee for skill acquisition.

It may be valuable to spend some $$ traveling down to the detailing bootcamps that AG puts on. Not sure if that still goes on though.

No i dont think so, Not if you don't have that kind of money to burn. It's just detailing. There is plenty of videos out there.

It's not rocket surgery as they say

I have never taken a class. But as soon as I can I plan on flying to Florida for Mike’s class—hands down.

Understanding your circumstances of the little one...it may be tough... BUT

I will say this. Until you can range such a training. Ask ask ask on this forum.

The reason why I would choose Mike’s class speaks for itself. He is the only professional that I know who WELL DOCUMENTS ALL his classes.

As far as I can tell (based on the posts) his classes REALLY appear to be THE MOST hands-on (and that’s what you need).

I had the opportunity to talk to an experienced detailer who have posted numerous times here before taking Mike’s class and what he mentioned the value from Mike’s class is unreal.

Mike is thorough and consistent. His manner of communication is universally clear and concise. His expertise is of such depth that it would take considerable time to realize on your own, what he's already experienced.

A lot of people might know their stuff, but can they effectively convey the message? That's a bit of money to spend on taking chances with one of the most important components of your "tool box" - which is your knowledge.

Also, you'd be in an environment with just about every top end too, product, system, etc at your disposal. Thorough. One would be hard pressed to find that elsewhere.

Again, a trip to Florida, and Autogeek, learning about detailing... That seems like a vacation to me.

I love this picture, Louise flew out to Autogeek here in Stuart, Florida from San Francisco, California to take our 3-day class.

She’s NOT a detailer, she’s actually a college professor. She wanted to learn how to detail so she could detail her own car.

Our classes are very hands-on so if that’s what a person is looking for that’s what they’ll get.

Everyone can decide for themselves if our class is right for their needs and their budget.

Me? I love teaching the classes and give everyone the red carpet treatment and a 5-Star experience.

The gentleman in the bottom left hand corner is also NOT a detailer - he came to learn how to detail his Lexus.

About 60% of the people that come to our class are coming to learn how to work on their own cars. Pretty cool if you ask me.

The other 40% are either seasoned established detailers or are just starting out.

If you plan to open your own shop and make a living out of detailing, then attending some type of training with a certificate that you can hang in your office is a good idea. $1900 is a lot of money for someone on a budget but consider it an investment in the business just like detailing supplies. Spend a little extra and take a trip to Florida to attend Mike's class. I have never seen or heard of a bad review.
You may also want to consider getting certified as an installer of IGL Kenzo or some other type of nano coating. You will definitely stand out from the average detailing crowd.
Starting your own business is a big leap of faith. Whatever you decide to do, we wish you the best.

I'm in Toronto as well, specifically Vaughan. Keep in mind that just because someone details exotics doesn't mean they know what they're doing. All it takes is someone uneducated enough to pay them to do their exotic car. I'm not saying at the same time, that the person doesn't know what they're doing. 1900 dollars is a big gamble to find out though. From the top of my head, I can only think of 4 or 5 detailing shops out of maybe 100 that are legitimate enough to properly detail.

Personally, I think car detailing is learned best from personal hands-on experience. Obviously if you've never done it before some guidance is warranted but that can be obtained from many sources for free. I wouldn't pay $1,800.00.

If you've been doing detailing for 9 years you should already have enough experience to do a job to whatever level of perfection you desire.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure we could all learn something from an $1,800.00 training session, but is what you learn worth $1,800.00? Only the person spending the cash can answer that. For me that answer is no.

I think I'm the only guy that teaches classes

The above was just one car out of 11 to 13 cars the class trained on over the course of the 3-day class.

As you can see.... these are the real deal.

I could do this all day....

If you want to learn how to hit a baseball, learn from Rod Carew. If you want to learn the guitar, learn from Eric Clapton. If you want to learn the proper techniques and tools to properly detail a car, learn from Mike Phillips.

I'd go with Pete Rose and Jimi Hendrix, but agree with you on Mike P. :)
