Is my clear coat coming off?

Hi Guys,

this is my first post in this forum and just wanted to say that I wish I'd found this site years ago instead of wasting a lot of time and effort doing things wrong/learning from my own mistakes.

I live in Australia and drive a 1998 Mitsubishi Magna (Diamante in the US), and it is always outside (not ideal I know!). I think my clear coat is starting to come off (see picture) and thought you guys might be able to confirm this/give me some tips on what i can do (other than a complete respray) to keep it alive.

Im onmy phone but more than likely when you're like oh #### is my clear coat failing.. It is, all you can do is contain it at that point (easiest and cheapest solution)
 
Someone posted a thread recently in reference to using Opti-Coat to preserve a failing clear coat....

Maybe someone can be more help

if its only one panel you can just get the one panel repainted...or if your handy can do it yourself with the right tools and technique.
 
Hi guys,

thanks for the fast input. I've checked out this opti-coat stuff, seems like a really good idea. Saw someone on here that fixed up their trashed paint, then applied opti-coat and it's going strong 15months later.

I guess now I just need to bite the bullet and get rid of all of the scratches, swirls and other junk before applying this. When I get around to it i'll post up some pics.

Not to turn my first post into a war, but I think SON1C was curious about the mechanics behind why such an idea would work. I believe the issue with my clear coat is it's damaged and that followed by oxidation is what will destroy it over time. Stopping air from reaching the area (ie, putting nail polish on it) would help to slow the damage (I believe).
