The coatings are so good and durable now! I get a glass like finish like a sealant with the coattings Ive tried. The hydrophobic qualities of them are unrivalled by any sealant I have tried! When you top a coating with ReLoad, Permanon or G|Techniq C2, dust blows off at 40 mph! Dirt/dust on my Expedition has reduced by a factorr of 3 or more. A water hose gets my vehicles 90+% clean. The MasterBlaster blows off the water that gravity doesnt clear and that aint much! I can do rinseless when I used to do 2 buckets and waterless when I used to do rinseless. I dont need Aquapel anymore! I have been tempted to try a Spray Wax or sealant but dont when I think about dust free @40 mph! I know some will call me a heretic but I gave my beauty waxes to a dear friend! I have no use for the dust it attracts! I have embraced the technology of the 21st centtury!Sealants are so 20th century and waxes are so 19th! Oh and I forgot coatings are harder than clear and much more marr resistant! So I ask, 'Are Sealants dead?'
Let us know what you think and why?

Jim, I think sealants like Wofy, Menzerna and Blackfire will still have a following mainly due to cost. You can't beat the slickness and feel with any of the three when doing a final wipe. Hell, I just put Permanon over C1.:help:

Jim,

It's funny you bring this up.

In another thread I commented on these new coatings and whether applying one then an occasional sealant topping and what to do with everything else I have? :dunno:

Permanon over any of these coatings is amazing!!

If anything I'm wondering if waxes are dead?

What will I do with all that space!! :dunno:

That is my combo on the Audi! I love it!

I don't think so at all. As for me personally I like applying a new coat of wax or sealant every so often on my own vehicles. And for customers, there are many that won't want to pay for a coating and/or won't maintain a coating properly, making it next to useless.

Also I don't think that the scratch/mar resistance of any of the coatings has been really proven. I've had both CQ and OC on vehicles and didn't notice any drastic reduction in wash induce marring. Thats just my observation. As for the sheeting, you're right, that just can't be beat by any of the traditional sealants or waxes on the market.

Waxes are dead to me, but this is a deal where beauty is in the eyes of the beholder! I dont want to get burned at the stake by dissing wax or sealant. I like a hard candy llook and the coatings do that MO' BETTA' than a sealanrt for a whole lot longer!

still hear about the death of carnauba waxes too .... we will see, but looks like they will all live on together as options.

The real question is, since the coatings form with the paint. What kind of damage do they actually cause when they come off? I'm not saying that I don't use the coatings because I do. I just don't know if anything will happen to the paint when the coatings decide to come off? They haven't been around long enough to test that. Maybe the new coatings will drastically cause the prices of waxes or sealants to drop over time too? Only time will tell.

I have considered opti-coating or c-quartz'ing my car. It would be nice to have on there for protection, but to me it kinda takes the fun out of it.

I like waxing my car, even if I have to do it every 4-5 weeks, I enjoy doing it.

Far from it IMO. I just did what you did giving away a bunch of my boutique nubas. I'm now 100% sealant on my vehicles, and never been more pleased. Hard to tell WG DGPS from a nuba anyway.
PS-Loving the UWW+ (been through three 22oz bottles so far). Thanks.

I have alot of waxes to burn through anyways. Maybe 3 years from now when I might run out Ill try a coating.

Jim, you can send me your waxes...

But I think there will always be a place for waxes and sealants as most people that are not us AutoGeeks will see the outlay of money for these coating as over the top. Even now I have some people that want a wax instead of a sealant. Even when I explain to them what a sealant can provide over a wax. (And I don't charge any different.) Mostly because they simply don't know or understand. Its just like vehicles... You have VW / Audi / Lambo. All the same overall company but different price points.

Thanks Dave. A great answer to a rhetorical question. I wasnt considering this from a professional standpoint but that was shortsighted on my part. I am sure you are spot on! BTW I bought a Dewalt 849X based on your excellent review! Thamnks much. I hope to try it this weekend!

Good post and a great question!

The only reservations that some seem to have in applying one of the coatings seems to be the amount of "etching" that is supposed to happen between the coatings and the clear-coat; the maintenance of the coatings; and re-application of coatings when they show signs of fatigue.

People with Show Cars may be hesitant to apply coatings.

People that enjoy waxing and trying out different products may balk at applying coatings.

Personally, I am about ready to pull the trigger and apply coatings to our vehicles.

IMO...Sealants are a nice upgrade from waxes...that's what I regularly use...but the coatings just might be the way to go.

The less I have to go round and round a vehicle, the happier I'll be! :)

I don't think any coating will come off (peel off) , but rather wear off. GTechniq has been on the market for over 5 years and has not had any problems with the oem paint.

Scott,

I think you're right!

There are so many different options regarding paint protection and some just enjoy detailing and using all the wonderful product we've invested in, yours truly included.

These new coatings are a revolutionary marvel but may not be for everyone. I've used a couple and they not only work they are incredible and if some real protection is what your after then these are about as bullet proof as they come.....for now anyway..

Awesome Jim! I think you will like it as much as I did! Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I have removed a couple of screw ups I made with no issues.

This point held me up a long time too! I now switch between spray boosters, ReLoad, C2 and Permanon to get a detailing fix! Also change up washes for fun.
