Is sealant dead?

Far from it IMO. I just did what you did giving away a bunch of my boutique nubas. I'm now 100% sealant on my vehicles, and never been more pleased. Hard to tell WG DGPS from a nuba anyway.
PS-Loving the UWW+ (been through three 22oz bottles so far). Thanks.
Glad to hear you like the UWW+! When you try a coating let us know what you think!

I have alot of waxes to burn through anyways. Maybe 3 years from now when I might run out Ill try a coating.
You dont have to give up your nubas. Top with them when the mood strikes you!

Since Opti coat I just wash the car with half the effort and follow with ultima WW as a Quik detailer. No more prepping car for winter. No more de- winterizing in spring. And the car looks great all the time.

Jim, you can send me your waxes...

But I think there will always be a place for waxes and sealants as most people that are not us AutoGeeks will see the outlay of money for these coating as over the top. Even now I have some people that want a wax instead of a sealant. Even when I explain to them what a sealant can provide over a wax. (And I don't charge any different.) Mostly because they simply don't know or understand. Its just like vehicles... You have VW / Audi / Lambo. All the same overall company but different price points.
I was too stupid to address or consider a pro's opinion!

Good post and a great question!

The only reservations that some seem to have in applying one of the coatings seems to be the amount of "etching" that is supposed to happen between the coatings and the clear-coat; the maintenance of the coatings; and re-application of coatings when they show signs of fatigue.

People with Show Cars may be hesitant to apply coatings.

People that enjoy waxing and trying out different products may balk at applying coatings.

Personally, I am about ready to pull the trigger and apply coatings to our vehicles.

IMO...Sealants are a nice upgrade from waxes...that's what I regularly use...but the coatings just might be the way to go.

The less I have to go round and round a vehicle, the happier I'll be! :)

Bob
You will be a happy camper Bob! Boost with several products when you want!

I don't think any coating will come off (peel off) , but rather wear off. GTechniq has been on the market for over 5 years and has not had any problems with the oem paint.
Excellent point Ron! OC has been around a while too!

Scott,

I think you're right!

There are so many different options regarding paint protection and some just enjoy detailing and using all the wonderful product we've invested in, yours truly included.

These new coatings are a revolutionary marvel but may not be for everyone. I've used a couple and they not only work they are incredible and if some real protection is what your after then these are about as bullet proof as they come.....for now anyway..
Well said Bobby!

Awesome Jim! I think you will like it as much as I did! Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Dave I will lose my rotary cherry! Never tried one before, Will start by jewelling after GG DA MF correction.

It should be a no brainer for harsh winter!

Wow, Jim....great thread! First off, I have never used sealants much.....I am a nuba guy. I have and only trust 2 sealants and they are WG DGPS and just recently added is UPGP. For me and my clients, those sealants still get used just as much as ever. The coatings(more specifically OC and OG) have just added to my tools. After doing a few vehicles with the Optimum coatings, word has spread and I have had clients for those coatings that I would have never seen nor will ever see again. So that is business that I would have never seen at all.

As for me, most of my work is all about polishing and people looking for the best look possible with durability or weather related effects taking a back seat. So I still rely on on proper polishing and the awesome look of a nuba over any sealant of coating.

So as far as death of a sealant....I think it's not the case but more so an available option to add more tools to your tool box and even further cater to a clients specific needs.

Beautifully stated Jim! I am glad there are pros like you around! I considrer you guys artists and craftsmen! Wish I had that gift!

I have a BMW ADVANCED 7 series to do Saturday, and I plan on using a mix of sealant and coatings. Im gonna coat both bumpers and lower rocker panels, rims, and lights in OC 2.0 and the rest of the car in klasse sealant after a good polishing with 849x.

Can ReLoad be used over a sealant or vice versa or just by itself? I'm very happy with WG sealant and CG Black Light but if I could use ReLoad instead of sealant on my wife's black CX-9 then I'd be a happy camper.

Any yellowing problems yet? I guess you could only tell on white. Kind of like a cheap spray clear coat that will yellow.

Don't know Lou as the US has only had GTechniq for less then a year. The guy's across the pond has played with it for over 5 years. C1 was originally made to protect yachts and most boats are white and I never heard of the coating yellowing.

Wow Jim! I think I have never seen so many people in one thread at the same time!!

Awesome thread of course buddy! Anything you have to say I pay attention to.

Well you already saw what I had to say over at L2D but I don't think they are dead or even have a huge loss in market share. I think the coatings and nano sprays of today are far far superior but I haven't used any of them on my Sky (err, I guess I did try the C2 on the verticals - Thanks to you!). However I have been using coatings and or nano sprays on virtually every car I do lately. CQ topped with reload, OC, now Pemanon as a topper.... (Can't wait to blow that all over my undercarriage and calipers.. and the rest of the car for that matter :) !)

Anyway, like I mentioned over there nothing is as slick as a couple of my favorite polymer sealants but of course for cars that are driven every day and not washed often enough the coatings have some major pros which you highlighted.

What are the major brands of these coatings? How long do they typically last in good weather (california), and can you top them with a sealant of a neuba after a period of time? Lastly, how do you get them off? One more, what is the look compared to a great sealer or a great neuba like Souveran?

Some of the many coatings:

Optimum - Opti-Coat----------- Ceramic-Silicon Carbide clear resin coating

CarPro - CQuartz----------- Ceramic Nano-tech

Gtechnique - C1----------- Crystal Lacquer

Element 119 - System X----------- Ceramic pre-cursor bonded with Si and O

Some of the many nano sprays:

CarPro Reload

Permanon

Gtechnique C2

Ok so how does it compare in looks to wax and to best sealers? can you top it with wax or sealer, and if so, how does it look? How long does it actually last?
