Is this normal?

So I fired up my new Flex 3401 DA last night to work on my glass top stove. It really seemed to get hot. Now mind you, I was applying some pressure to it, but not more than I would a rotary. My Dyna does not get hot like this. Is this normal?
 
richly I don't use a Flex but rather a Dewalt & PC. I've read extension. Ive read certain extension. Odds can make these tools run hot. Just wondering if you used an extension cord? If so was it different than your normal one?

Mine has the factory 30' cord.
 
The other thing is that I had removed the handle so I was holding the housing. I will try it with the handle back on to see if that makes a difference. My bad above: 25' cord, not 30'.
 
Do you mean the cord or the machine? Mine gets hot and if I use it for a long period of time it gets really hot. the cord never really feels warm.
 
All tools get hot after hard use over time but I've never experienced anything like what you're saying...

In fact, if you are holding the forward bale handle and the rear body handle you shouldn't feel much heat at all.

The head and body will get hot from the motor and gear drives but not enough to affect the handles where you hold the tool and this is normal.

Richy, I know what you mean, mine gets hot as well. Especially the metal housing, almost like you're touching a hot stove. The top of the machine also gets rather warm. The handle I think is ok.

I was just chalking it up to 100deg days plus when I wasn't using the machine it was laying in direct sunlight for the most part.

I have the 9' power cord. I use the 5" backing plate w/ 5.5" pads, would that affect it?
 
This Thursday as we're buffing out the 2012 Camaro I take some temperature readings using the new MicroTemp MT-PRO Non-Contact Digital Infrared Thermometer to check how hot it's getting.

I'll wait till it's been used to buff out an entire panel.

I've run my 3401 for 12 straight hours with a helper running behind me removing polish residue. I went to change pads and stuck the machine between my knees while wearing shorts,:eek: If you ever do this don't worry, you won't be doing it a second time.

It's completely normal for the aluminum gear cover to get hot on this machine.

The Flex 3401 does get hot under the hood. The plastic shields some consider cosmetic are removed then burns occur. I like Mike's idea, the next class he'll take a temperature reading before and after so we can see how hot these baby's get! :props:
 
I told you about this when we discussed the 3401 Richy! I keep the handle on flat and place my palm on the center as if it wasn't there with my fingers on the handle.

You know what buddy? I remembered that you had mentioned it after I posted. I was curious to see if others had the experience too.
 
Lol, cool buddy! I just felt bad for a second like I hadn't warned you about that part or something. Just wanted to make sure you knew I had. :) :cheers:
