Is this shady?

JB, if your customers know you are honest and trustworthy they are more likely to refer new customers to you and come back for more. However if they think you are taking stuff or catch you stealing stuff they will never comeback and tell everyone that they know. Word of mouth can either be your best friend or your worst nightmare, so listen to what everyone is telling you and save your self the trouble. Anyways is ten dollars really worth losing business over. Mike...

I'm going to go against the grain here. The biggest mistake you made was washing and waxing the car for *just* $20.

My thoughts exactly. Seriously though, don't let what the customer thinks about this practice guide your actions. It's your integrity that's at stake. Ultimately you have to be at peace with your actions. It also shouldn't be about the thought of a bigger tip. It doesn't always work this way but often good things follow proper actions and I would wish this for all who set a high moral standard. My dad always taught me if it isn't yours don't use it without permission. With this mindset it's no problem taking it to the next level. If it isn't yours don't take it. My father won't read this but I would like to say thanks dad all the same. I appreciate the "life rules"! My conscience doesn't keep me awake at night. ;)

If you indeed kept the change it was shady on your part.

As my 5 year year old's teacher says "that would be a sad choice"

Then again you could institute a "retrieval and processing fee" of say 50% for all currency recovered, but waive it each time. This would spur them to be more conscious and tidy to begin with and evidence your good will.
