Yesterday I was polishing and the handle eventually would no longer stay in the polisher. Apparently I stripped the threads out inside the machine.

I looked at Porter Cables website and couldn't fine any parts for them.

Can you buy replacement parts for these polishers?

My suggestion would be to go to your tool and die supplier or Graingers if you have one near and get threaded insert. Need to take your handle and PC so they know what size.

Same thing happened to mine, so now I just use it without the handle.

Most automotive stores will have thread insert repair kit. (autozone)

Holy crap, how could you strip out a what, 3/8" thread that you only hand tighten?? Pretty shoddy manufacturing if this is happening to multiple users, I've never had any problem with my old PC's.

That will happen when you are working the tool with LOOSE HANDLE. Steel bolt threaded in aluminum or plastic will do it every time. Best thing to do is use some teflon tape to tighten the handle so it stays tight.

I never use my handel any more. I used it when I first started machine polishing but after reading more I started to pay attention to my technique and realized that if I tried to apply any pressure while using the handle it would compress the pad on one side more then the other. So now I never use it. If you really want the handle I'm not sure how to fix it :( but I think you might like the results better if you don't use it.

I can understand how you stripped it. Freakin thing comes loose on higher speeds by itself. And then in the moment you crank on it in anger..... yeah, I am going to buy a Flex....

seriously though, if you use it, go buy some inserts like mentioned above.

The newer Porter Cable 7424XP use a metric thread of M8 x 1.25

What I show everyone is to take the handle and pitch it and by doing this you'll then place your hand directly on top of the head and this helps you to keep the pad flat against the paint to maximize pad rotation.

Personal preference of course.

In my e-book and in the paperback version on pages 50 and 51 I cover all of this including pictures of the bolts you can purchase at any hardware store to bolt the plastic cover on so it won't accidentally slide off.

The Griot's and Megs versions have a locking tab inside the plastic housing so they won't slide off but the PC doesn't.

During last week's 1970 Camaro project I taught both Nicole and her Dad to use the PC without the handle... no problems...

First up was to show Thomas and his daughter Nicole how to use a DA Polisher for the first time... I got Thomas trained and right to work...

Just an option... plus chances are good, (at least I'm assuming), that you only stripped one side? If so as long as you get the right bolt and washer and thread it correctly you can get a way with only using a bolt on the side that's still in good shape.

Just wanted to point this out as another option.

Look Mom... no handles!

Now it's time for some hands-on training for Nicole who picked up machine polishing like she'd been doing it all her life...

same here. i took the handle off which i never used and put a bolt in its place so the plastic cover wouldnt come off. no problemeo since! i still love the pc for its bang for the buck value. i dont use it to make a living though.

hope this helps.

Although I agree that you have a better control without the handle, ergonomically speaking it sure is a wrong way to use the tool. Vibration alone will cause problems with carpal tunnel syndrome. Now if you had some anti-vibration material on top of gear box it would be much better. Just my observation and 2 cents.

FYI- I bought those bolts at my local hardware store for about $3.00, with washers and an extra Allen key.

If you can't get a part on that list I posted to repair your PC, you still might be able to get a bolt into the stripped side, by going up or down one size and dropping in some Loctite (or other brand bolt adhesive).
