It's been awhile - need advice

Wow, it's been a minute since I have been on the forum and also done any extensive detailing. I am a little rusty...

So, would love to get opinions/suggestions on what to do...

I just bought a 1968 Mustang that has been painted straight urethane black...
It has fine scratches all over...

What would be the process I should do?

Products, pads?

What about sealant and wax? What about black light?

Personally, i was very happy with sonax perfect finish on my soft paint, toyota. I even removed deep scratches using a high course foam pad. I done multi steps using just perfect finish with different pads.

I think the game so to speak is in the pads...my opinion.

When you say, "straight urethan black" do you mean it is a single stage paint with no clear coat, a non-metallic black paint, or both? Whether you have a clear coat or not might lead to different advice.

I can't really help from the polishing perspective as I've never worked on a non-clear coated classic like you Mustang.

I will say from a sealant or wax perspective, I've been very happy with Collinite 845 and Wolfgang's SiO2 Paint Sealant I'm testing out right now on my own car. Between the two, I think the Wolfgang would look spectacular on a well polished, non-metallic black car. It makes my black metallic car look great, but non-metallic black has so much more depth when done right.

Besides the polishing and protecting, I advise you look to your washing/drying process to keep the scratches from coming back. Nothing worse than doing all that work and getting all the swirls back. Go with a good quality, soap with lots of lubrication, a soft wash mitt(s) you can keep clean or swap out while washing, and really soft drying towels or a blower of some sort. The less you touch the car the better. When you have to touch it, the softer and cleaner the medium the better too in order for the swirls to stay away.

When you say 'fine scratches' are we actually talking scratches or swirls and love marks from a history of improper washing?

Of course do a test spot first, but my first step would be a Lake Country Force Hybrid white pad on the Flex 3401 with 3D One or if you are a Rupes owner, Rupes white pad on a LHR21 and Rupes Uno polish. Change pads as needed for more correction or more polishing. Top off with 3D Poxy or Collinite 845, both very good.
