Hey guys!

I have a 2008 750i Jet Black. (Most beautiful color when corrected, and finished correctly but a hell to maintain)

Anyways, I bought the car with 44k miles on it. Now has 60k. My problem is the front bumper looks faded, and dreary. I wish I could explain it better.

However, I'm just trying to see what I can do to restore it. Would wet-sanding and polishing restore the paint? The rest of the car is mostly swirl, and hologram free. Also the rest of the car has a phenomenal shine to it. I use a lot of chemical guys products.

The front end just hurts my eyes :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to AGO.

Bumpers have very thin clear and the paint doesn't dissipate heat the same way metal does so care must be taken when working on them.

It would be helpful if you posted a picture. I'm guessing it's factory applied paint?

Generally speaking I'd avoid sanding and try machine compounding then polishing. Use 4" pads if you have them.

I'll have to try a bit more on compounding and polishing. I use a porter cable 7424xp, and have a wide array of pads. It just never finishes how I'd like and restore a good shine.

I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow in the sunlight. The lighting isn't optimal right now. But thank you very much for the response.

Updated pictures.

I'm thinking that maybe the previous owner/dealership maybe might have repainted the bumper and it looks maybe dust got into the clear or paint.

Here you can see the R/R of the vehicle, and how deep a rich the jet black looks.

This is under the right front headlight.

This next is under the left side headlight. This was after a mcguiars 205/orange pad. Then, me being frustrated and pushing a little hard on the microfiber (try to look past the micromarring)

This is the left side of the bumper near the fog light

You can see all the specs

Any idea how to fix

It could be a repaint like you said. You can really see some orange peel in the last picture. It looks like contaminates in the clear coat, or maybe sand pitting that then gets filled with little amounts of wax or polishes. Do a wipe down of the bumper with IPA and then put your hand in the thinnest Baggie you can find and run it across the surface. See if you feel any imperfections.
Either way I'm not sure polishing can rid you of that problem.

They look like stone chips and bug etching. But could also be just white paint? in which case clay will take care of that.

Wouldn't white paint have come off when he was polishing before?

Hi - I have a jet black 06 330i with the same problem on the front bumper. I have resolved to get this repainted. I haven't tried to fix with a buffer. the pitting is too deep.

Is the pitting also on the headlights? I have the same issue on the headlights, and am preparing to try some serious wet sanding...

I have an 08 750i in alpine white, and believe me there is not a lot of paint on that front bumper. Up here in Pa. We get a lot of stone chip from the trucks and salt. I am planning on having the front bumper reprinted and a clear 3m film installed only on the bumper. If you do attempt to polish it out be very cautious when doing so. good luck

Thanks for all the replies guys! I can't thank you enough!

I do believe that the bumper was repainted. The car came from West Orange NJ, which is outside of NYC. The car's GPS had many points in there for the Hamptons. I believe he traveled often through the city. Usually cars from NYC, or surrounding areas were repainted on the bumpers.

Anyways, I may try to wetsand/polish to see if I can restore it.

I guess I will have to be extra careful. Seems to me that you guys say there isn't a lot of paint/ and clear on the front bumper. Either way I'm in a position where the best recommendation is repaint. So either way if I eF something up, welp, repaint it is.
