Just how necessary is using a wax or sealant.........

Gotcha, I guess I just assume that when someone uses the term "garage queen" that it stays there and is looked at while enjoying a beverage of your choice and have a couple buddies over and talk about how cool it would be driving it. I'm from Detroit originally and have seen many of these type cars and have heard this term for all of my life. As far as resale value of new cars, well, that's a crap shoot at best.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm singling anyone out, its just I hate the term, that's all.

I have a "Garage Queen". It has 5,500 miles in roughly 2 years - so I do drive it.

For me, Garage Queen means weekend driver weather permitting.

As far as protection - I use Wolfgang Sealant simply beacuae it attracts less dust than wax.

To answer why do I have a garage queen?

My wife and I bought new cars in 2010. Since then we both got jobs where we work from home.

So, they sit until we go to the store or out to eat, etc. We can afford to keep both so, why not.

Heck, I spend more time driving my lawn mower than my cars.

People always ask "Why don't you drive them". I respond "Where would you like me to go".

????? If you're prepping the paint properly and using a good quality sealant then maintaining the vehicle correctly, the sealant will last months not weeks. Most carnubas will wear off in a couple months max but sealants last much much longer.

That's not true at all. To me, a sealant or wax is dead if it doesn't bead.

Collinite 845 fails after several weeks, Collinite 476 fails after several weeks.... so does BFWD and many other so called strong waxes or sealants that promise months of protection.

It's not even in the prep...you can clay the paint all you want, polish it all you want, do 100 IPA wipedowns and dawn washes. If you daily drive your car, and it stays in the sun and gets washed no more often than 2-3 times a month, all of these products will fail very quickly.

Sure, on a garage queen that is driven on the weekends, it might be a different story.

There's been a bit of mission creep to this thread from my original posting.

I was originally asking members' thoughts on my lack of getting a sealant or wax on during the last year. Information about it being garaged, covered, and driven when I feel like it vs "daily driver" is quite material to members understanding the scenario - since I would think if it was out 24/7 or used in all conditions = a completely different type of reply or recommendation. I never used the word "queen" anywhere.......

Why I choose to drive it or something else some particular day isn't relevant to my original solicitation for suggestions on either urgency of action, nor to my follow up as to recommendations from those w/Dodo experience.

But just so it's clear, it's actually very simple : I work; wife does not. She liked car; I bought car (sometimes that's just how it goes, but In this case I like car too). If I drive car to work, it's away from home, so then not avail for her to drive. If it's at home, then it's in the garage. Sometimes I drive it to work, but since I have about a 3 min commute @ 30 mph, there's no reason to. Thus, I drive it for fun, not to sit at work all day. The cover seems self-explanatory to me; a good one is only a few hundred bucks; car = considerably more bucks.

Now, as the OP, I respectfully ask that we get back on helping a 50 something car-care noob (me) select a sealant or wax that'll look good on silver with the above info in consideration regarding use and exposure.

Amid the various discussions, I got 2 Dodo, and a BFWD, suggestion, I think. I think I read that BFWD is a sealant and the 2 dodos are waxes? Maybe I just use the BFWD the top with dodo and call it pretty.

I'd want to have some sort of easy spray-wax/sealant just so the cover slides on and off easily.

I've been a participant on a BMW forum for years. I get the mission creep; just wanted to clarify wasn't my plan to get a "queen" discussion going - not posting for any agenda other than knowing that once I started the discussion I would follow through and buy & apply a selected product all in the name of social responsibility after taking up people's time in discussion, and all that.

There's no way (or reason) to sum up a couple's dynamics in a paragraph. I just wanted to outline the car's exposure to he elements. And wife? Dude, she picked it out, it's generally available for her every day as I might drive it 3 or 4 times a month to work, if that, and so she runs around in it as she prefers. Or, with 3 cars and a truck, sometimes she'll drive something else. I dunno what else to say; after almost 30 yrs of marriage, stuff like that doesn't really get all up on the radar. But, taking care of it is in my court, so I gotta get on the stick in that dept.

A good sealant like Menzerna Powerlock will last 5 or 6 months, maybe more if you don't drive often.

And it also shows that you care about the gift (from my understanding it was a gift, isn't?).

Besides, 2 hours of work twice a year is no big deal..

I think I see what you're saying re wife driving it - when I said it's in the garage if I'm not driving it? Ok, no, what I mean is, it doesn't sit outside in the sun or weather when not in use. And "use" is generally defined by whether or not she runs around in it that day.

When did you have such a poor experience with Collinite? I have never used 476 but I have used 845 a fair amount would say it lasts several months, not several weeks... and I thought 476 was suppose to be tougher.

I guess I don't understand a brand new car that just sits around all the time and only goes out if there's no cloud within miles of ones garage, that's all. Today's cars are so great as far as driveability goes, why not drive it more often, I understand rain and snow, ofcoarse but those that sit in the garage for extended periods of time make no sense to me, the tires are round for a reason!

Why does it matter if it is brand new or not?

I don't think a 1957 Chevy for example drives any worse than my 2004 civic. I mean sure the '57 didn't have air conditioning but otherwise it went down the highway like a champ.

I am sure some of it personal preference...some people just like a particular generation of car. Whether its a 60's mustang, 70's mustang, 90's mustang, or a brand new mustang, it is still someones baby and someone else's beater.
