Knowing What You Know Now...

1. The AG towels are much more heavier (high gsm) and nicer. The best towel deals come from Microfiber Tech. They sell a lot of the towels other places do for 1/2 the price

2. Never tasted Gary's juice, but I have ONR & many other rinseless washes. ONR is OK, but UWW+ and Pinnacle are just nicer IMO.

3. As for what I would have done differently:

- buy the good stuff first. Don't try and save money buying something less expensive thinking its just the same if your serious about this hobby. You will just end up buying the better stuff later and the cheap stuff will gather dust.

- if you find a product you like a lot, get it buy the gallon instead of just keep buying small bottle

- follow all the correct steps even if you think you can skip it
:iagree: I recently downloaded all the MSDS forms off the internet to have a current and thorough MSDS book in my shop. As I began going through the shop writing down product/chemical names and numbers to begin my search I thought, "Why even bother keeping all this stuff around and getting MSDS forms for stuff I'll never even use again?" Instead, I began to box up all of the products and chemicals that are no longer used in my process so my MSDS list would be shorter and my shop would be more orderly.

When I think of all the money I spent on all of that stuff it kind of disappoints me.

As for which towels to buy....Depends on the color of paint you'll be working on. If you have light colors like white, silver, light tan etc. I'd just grab a few dozen of the cheapest towels that AG offers. On the other hand if you have black or other dark colored paint, you'll want some known higher quality MF towels for finishing the paint, because the dark colors will allow the sun or other ambient light to illuminate the swirls much more than the lighter colored vehicles.

I personally find it's cheaper for me to buy 4 or 5 "twelve packs" of towels at or around $1-$1.50 per towel and use a brand new towel each time any paint finishing work is being done.

The bottom line is, it costs a lot of money to work out a process that works for you. Yes, you can save a little or even a lot of money by following the lead of others in a thread like this, but a lot of the suggestions you'll get on these forums will be mostly opinion so you have to spend the money, try the stuff out and form your own opinion on nearly everything.

Have fun with it above all!! Life's too short not to. :xyxthumbs:

Thanks for the reply.

I was initially considering this, and still can't find info on the towels used on his site. His method requires quite a few towels and I wondered if either of these would be good choices, even if used with something like ONR or UWW+:

Super Soft Deluxe Microfiber Towels, microfiber detailing towels, microfiber buffing towels, detail cloth, micro fiber

6 Pack Miracle Towels

Ron

I would use a high quality MF towel. As long as they are plush and soft. Something you would use for waxing and buffing. You can check CG's website. I just bought a bunch of the yellow and black towels and they work great. They were cheap as well. Gary does have towels on his website but they don't seem like anything special. You will probably need 1 towel per panel. These towels will be dedicated No rinse towels you can't use them for anything else. I don't think you need to go nuts trying to find the right towels as long as they are not a waffle weave or straight polish towels. The stuff is so slick it's nuts. I mainly use it more for everything else it does.

To Chase: Yeah if I would have known, I would have gotten the Griots, especially because of the life time warranty.

I am going with the Rupes because it works smooth as butter.

Junkman says the Flex works better with smooth pads. I don't know because when I used the Flex, it had hex pads. Maybe that's why I felt the pull. (Don't know the name)

In the end any machine can do the job with the right skill/technique

Have you gotten your Rupes yet? How do you like it?

I'm thinking long and hard about getting one before long.

No I have not purchased it yet. was going to get it this month, but tripped while carrying my laptop for school. It then messed up when it fell on the concrete floor lol, so now I am going build my own HTPC (home theater personal computer)

So maybe next month.

I only used it once, when I went to

Detailing
15801 Rockfield Blvd, Ste A, Irvine, CA 92618

(I called AG and they said posting the info is ok, as long as I don't post links or talk about out prices.

After using it once for about 15 mins. I was convinced this is my next machine.

I talked the guy about getting a Dewalt again or Rupes. He said "nobody uses rotaries anymore" (not exact words, but close to that)

I also brought up the Mod being used on the Rupes, he just replied with a "huh...?"

He also said he is not sure the correct way of pronouncing it, but doesn't pronounce it like Rupees because it sounds like Herpes hahaha

Yeah that one.

I have a i7-2720, 8GB, Dual 500gb HDDs, 1080p screen. I bought 2 years ago for something to use and play with at work. I paid almost 1700 new and it's still like a rocket ship. Runs BF3 on medium with 30-40 fps. The only reason why I would sell it is because I just purchased a desktop and have no need for it anymore.

I'm building next go around, but I love my new alienware and plan on keeping it around for the next 4 years at the minimum.

Welcome to the world of detailing Kappy. I know what you mean about it being an obsession when you start. It's one of my few hobbies that actually gives me a payback after years, higher car resale value, no need for repainting.

I see a few recommendations people have given for pads and polishes. Pretty much everyone here gives great advice, and if any advice was given on accident that may be too advanced or may compromise your vehicle or equipment, other members will always chime right in and let you know.

If you don't mind sharing what vehicle are you detailing? I ask because some polishes and pads work more effectively for certain vehicles. This is why I, and the majority of other geeks here always recommend doing a test spot. You could have a high end German vehicle that has ceramic clear coat which would bring up an entire new area of tips.

Happy detailing

In answer to your question, I have a new, last year's model, 2012 black Nissan Murano.

I initially thought the finish on the car was in a little better shape than it is, but there are some swirl marks, probably caused by the dealer washing the car. Overall, nothing is that noticeable, but if you read my introduction post you'll see that I saw a scuff mark on the car, which I thought I might be able to take care of myself, and that started me on my journey to detail-land.

I've been reading posts and reviews for several days, trying to get as much information as I can before ordering anything. It was only yesterday that I decided to take a slightly different approach to what I wanted to order, after considering how few chemical products I use around my house, and wondering if I could find detailing products that would be effective, and a little safer to use.

I discovered the Eco Touch line, and after reading various threads and positive reviews, I'm going to try these. I know there are other products that might work better, but as long as I get good results from these, that I'm happy with, I don't feel the need to compare them to others. At least for now. :)

For the time being I'm concentrating on getting what I need to wash and maintain the appearance of the car. Once I do that for a period of time, I'll take the next step and get what I need to remove the scratches and polish the car.

I ordered the Optimum No Rinse, which was one of the first products I had considered. I've read reviews of several others and still thought this would be a good one to try first. I also invested in the Speedy Surface Prep Towel rather than traditional clay, which might be overkill for a novice, but wanted to take advantage of some newer technology. And a couple of brushes. And a spatula to help remove the waffle from the built-in waffle maker. Kidding.

And I bought towels, which was probably the most confusing decision I made. I guess it will only be through trial and error that I discover which ones I like and which I don't. Better to find out now before removing the scratches.

Love that monitor set up. I'll mess around on BF3 every now and then. I actually bought the AW for Flight Simulator X. I'm planning on returning to flight school this year and wanted to get back in the sim to fly certain procedures and get familiar again.

What monitors and how do you have them mounted together? I'm tempted... :)

My ex had an 8 month old LE AWD when we split up. I recently remembered that I washed it with dawn to strip it with full intentions of performing a full correction within a few days when her schedule allowed. We split up before the correction and paint seal happened.

Enjoy that protection free murano in the Houston environment and weather. :))

Ohhh how karma is a #####.

Man oh, oh man... Lol hahaha...

Did you tell her that it needs a wax to protect her clear? Lol

If I was you I would just send her a text to give her a heads up. Cos karma does not pick sides lol (this made me laugh 😂)

Knowing what I know now.. I would have,

Bought a steamer from the get. It has SAVED so much time for me on my whole process its unreal. Also my body appreciates it as well.

Would have went to sams club and got their Pro-Force towels sooner instead of really expensive MF towels because I could have spent more on other things.

And the biggest for me is: If you do this for money, Not over working yourself and getting under paid only giving the client what was discussed prior to work being performed. (I did this bad in the start and still do it but not half as bad as I used too) Just to get my name out there.

Those are the big ones I can think of

This is an easy one....CARS are meant to be driven...NOT sitting around getting buffed out.

I really enjoy driving my car much more than I do slaving over it trying to keep is looking perfect, which you will never achieve (for very long).

I have one flat screen HDTV 40" Sceptre (cheapy I know)

But I want more 40" to make my movie experience that more awesome.
Watching Mike Phillips with a 120" TV setup would be awesome lol.
I have a flat screen TV that I run laptop > HDMI >40" Sceptre

I want to have movie night on the weekends and invite friends over with 120"s of movie experience with 7.1 surround sound.

I have also been looking into HDMI projectors. Lol

Oh those aren't my monitors btw, I just googled it to give me ideas of my future setup

Still a Newb when it comes to the really technical stuff however.
