Hi all:

I recently acquired an '07 Porsche 911 Turbo (Basalt Black) and immediately started detailing it.

I started with a Dawn wash, Iron-X, Clay, and then moved on to Menzerna Intensive Polish (orange uber pad) followed by Micro Polish (blue uber pad) with my PC 7424. Yes, all of my detailing supplies are a bit dated :).

In any case, I later realized I have some more swirl removal to do on a few sections and, in general, I could get the paint to gleam even more. I definitely rushed as I was polishing...probably just fatigued. Good news is that I didn't coat the paint as originally planned...simply used some Optimum Spray Wax on it so I could easily strip and continue on polishing.

That was a couple weeks ago. During the process, I ordered some Sonax Perfect Finish (figured this would be the good one-step I need to get it to 95%) and Lake Country Hybrid White pads from AG. I was a bit confused why it was 6.5" but figured it would still work with my 7424 backing plate.

Finally, my question -- will it be a big waste of time / inefficient to use the hybrid pad on my PC rather than my orange or blue 5.5" foam pads?

Not quite :)

I know you can use a 6.5" pad on that backing plate. My question is really about efficiency here. Since I have a relatively "wimpy" PC 7424, will it work reasonably well with the 6.5" hybrid pad and Sonax PF or should I not even bother trying and just use my 5.5" orange or blue pads?

Really looking to see if anyone here has experience with the hybrid pads on the 7424.

Your smaller pads will cut faster than the 6.5s. Cut on speed six, use 15-20 lbs of downward pressure, clean your pad after every section, and use slow arm movements.
If you encounter dust, decrease the size of your work area.
Also, microfiber pads cut very we'll with the PC.

You can use a 4 inch backing plate on a 7 inch pad doesnt mean you should or your going to get good results.

The answer is no you should not use the 6.5 inch pad on your 5 inch plate you can but your not going to get good results.

You need the plate to transfer the energy to the pad to the paint more mass of the pad means more energy to move and your plate can not do that it will "work" but if you plan on getting 95% that is not the route to go.

Any pad on any machine can work it all depends on

1.the situation
2. How hard/soft the paint is
3. The level of perfection desired
4. The damage
5. Time or money willing to spend on project

I worked on a 03 911 with some of the softest paint i ever came across i could not use my boss because it was scouring the paint.

So i tried my pc and a medium cut polish and 5.5 inch griots garage correcting pad.

It still left some hazing so i followed it with a perfecting pad by griots and sf4500

So sometimes the pc does what the most expensive buffer cant do.

If the paint is hard the pc can do what the flex rupes rotary boss can do it will just take twice as long, depending on the hardness softness.

I also did a 09 Subaru blue it had soft sticky paint couldnt use the boss had to use the pc7424xp with..... sf4000 and got 95% perfection with one step.

So any pad will work on any machine it all depends on the situation what will work on one wont on the next

I'd test on one of the remaining swirl spots you have with the Sonax and white hybrid pad. This will be the least aggressive approach and you will see if it yields the desired result. If not step up the polish and use a different pad like the orange one u have to finish off the swirls.

The 6.5 pad will work with the OE backing plate. The pad size may get a little bulky in tighter areas just make sure you're still rotating the pad or you won't polish that tight/awkward section. I'm sure you've experienced the rotation stop if you get a pad on edge. This is where smaller pads help, and a smaller diameter backing plate.

You will only know if your going to waste time once you do your test spot. The Sonax/white pad should be perfect for the finishing polish step, to get a nice deep gloss and protection.

Although hybrid pads are great, for your PC you want to go with thin pads. The PC doesn't have the power you are going to really need to get those pads to work the way they should.

Meguiars has some new thin pads they came out with that will work great on the PC

Thanks guys -- I think I'll try a "hybrid" (no pun intended) of some of the reco's above. I'll use my blue 5.5" pad with the Sonax PF on a test spot. If that doesn't work I'll escalate to the orange 5.5".

Maybe I won't even bother trying the Hybrid pad...

Rut Row........ I've got some 6.5" hybrid pads (not knowing which pad to choose) so I just threw a dart at the board and picked various pads..... AFTER I received them I called and asked which would be best for my PC and that I was a NuB and they suggested the flat foam pads..... *sigh* live and learn... I never thought about the additional power needed for a 6.5" pad..... and I've got a bunch of different model 6.5" pads..... Oh well, we live and learn.

Quick update -- Polished the back half of my car last night starting with an orange pad and the Sonax PF on a test spot (which happened to have the most visible swirls).

Worked great but started kicking off a lot of dust after a couple panels as my pad (a bit old) was starting to degrade on the edges. So, I switched to a blue pad and that also worked great (on less swirled up panels, mind you). I will continue to use the blue pads to finish up the car except for a couple spots that require a bit more correction.

When done, I am planning on doing a 35% alcohol wipe down and then a quick ONR wash before applying OptiCoat 2.0.
