I am new to detailing. I just bought 7424xp. I am going to buy a polisher too. I was wondering what pads and sizes are the most common that everyone uses for both tools. I am going to use M105 and M205 compounds. I seems to be a popular combination. I am sure it is a great debate between pads, but if there are another brand that I should be looking at instead. Please let me know. Thanks to all. Great site. Loads of information.

I don't know what you mean by "polisher" but for you PC the most common is 5.5" orange and white CCS or Flat pads, The Cyan and Tangerine Hydro-tech are very popular too. One of the most popular right now is the Megs Micro Fiber System.

I use both a Porter Cable 7424XP as well as a Makita rotary... I have 5.5" & 4" Hydro-Tech pads I use on both.

Get the 5.5" flat pads. The PCXP does not do well with the larger 6.5" pads. Some like the Hydro-Tec pads, I'm not a fan, the flat pads remain the most popular. Get a 6 pack, it's cheaper that way. 2 orange, 2 white, 1 black and 1 blue should do it. The orange and white are for the 105, depending on how bad the finish is - the orange is a bit more aggressive than the white. Follow up with 105 on a black pad and finish with a wax or sealant on the blue.

OTOH, if you don;t have anything yet, I'd seriously go to the Meg's DA Mircofiber system. If you want a sealant rather than their wax, just switch out the Finishing Wax for 205 or Ultimate Polish or Menz 106. Get a blue pad for applying waxes and sealants and you;re good for quite a while - the mf pads reportedly last a good bit longer than foam pads.

Lake Country is a very good pad IMO!!:dblthumb2:

SK2 i was thinking rotary not polisher. sorry. Heavy Metal.. I really don't have much yet. Could I use the Megs Microfiber system with my PC7424xp?

I see that I can get Meg's Microfiber system for my PC7424xp. The next question is 5" or 6" kit. Even with this kit or any other combination. I should still get a rotary polisher right? For the heavier defects.

Should get the 5" kit. The kit should take out some pretty heavy defects, but it wouldn't hurt to have a rotary.

work the pc for a bit before you get into rotary. You can pick up the pc, watch a few videos, polish the next day, and get pretty good results.

rotary you'll need to practice with (on a junk panel and not on your car ideally)

Does one need to then use a 5" backing plate for the 5.5" pads and the PC 7424xp? I purchased the 7437 which comes with a 6" backing plate and having a larger backing plate vs pad makes me very nervous...

yes you need a 5 in bp for 5.5 inch pads

6 in bp is for 6.5 inch pads. Not ideal for correction using the PC

if you want to use the Meg MF discs in future, might want to get the 5 in megs bp. It can be used with foam as well as the microfibre discs...

I just used the Lake Country CCS 5.5" and 4" spot buff pads with my PC 7424XP. I used orange white and red pads. I recommend the 4" spot buff pads to do smaller areas. It takes some getting used to vs the 5.5". I removed the handle on the PC when I used the 4" to give me better control.
