I assumed that it would be easy to find, was foiled, and finally thought to come here--where I assumed, again incorrectly, that there would be a sticky thread on it.
My wife's new special ordered Maverick will be ready for pickup in a couple of days; it's in town at the yard where the train drops them to taunt the dealers. Velocity blue, if that matters, with the moonroof.
Living in Las Vegas, I want to do what I can to protect the paint from UV. We have enough that we don't bother looking at treadle when buying cars, because the sun will do in the sidewalls long before treads matter.
And with 117F days being downright common, I want to get IR protection for the windshield and other windows (and more uv protection for the interior wouldn't hurt, either, although the damage seems to come more from temperature than than what UV gets through the glass.
And as I attest to search, I found myself drawing in snake oil and hyperbole!
Where can I learn what I need to know about what is worth having, and what prices should be like?
I can see us keeping it 10 years (I'll probably get the Ford ESP for that long from Granger), but can also see swapping it for a PHEV version in three.
It's really the uv damage more than the chips that worries me.
Is this something I can do adequately myself? I'm retired early to play with cars, but don't seem to bend over as well as I used to.
The prices for ceramic coating seem to range from $30 to $300; how far is worth going? I've asked for a few quotes from local, but not one has given me a straight answer. ("Call us. It starts at $XXX).
This car will live outside, although the carport will be up at some point this summer. It might get a garage once we move, but there's convertibles that get first crack at however many spaces I end up with (I want at least six spaces and two lifts, not counting a garage for daily drivers!)
I'm not so sure about my ability to apply a film perfectly--but the quotes I've gotten so far seem to exclude the windshield!
I'm not worried about tinting; just the IR.
And feel free to tell me "hey, stupid, you missed the index of tall the articles on this". I tried the search, but came up empty handed.
OTOH, I'd rather go to an anti-novocaine dentist than watch a video.
