Let’s talk tire dressings!

Dark side after a light wipe down. Easily last 3-4 weeks on Michelins.

Darkside with a wipe down looks fantastic, deep and rich.........................

Duragloss 253 is still my favorite and I've not found anything I've liked better when it comes to looks or durability. PERL diluted 1:1 comes closest. I've tried others to include Optimum Tire Gel and now Griots Ceramic Tire Dressing. When I run out of the Griots on the shelf right now I'll be going back to the Duragloss.

I just couldn't love Optimum Opti-Bond, I've also found that it separates in the bottle after a while. I made the mistake of ordering the larger 32-oz bottle, most of which I haven't used.

However, I did at least learn two things from Opti-Bond -

1. Always buy the smallest size of any product to try first, then order big once you know you like it.

2. Always point a pop-top lid away from your face when pushing the cap closed, saves product being shot into your eyes! And no, it wasn't very pleasant having Opti-Bond Tire Gel in my eye.

I used Endurance for quite a while, back when I was pretty green. The idea of it lasting beyond the next wash and into the 3rd meant I thought that was a good thing. But then I discovered the notion of "sling", and the corresponding annoyance of cleaning black dots off the lowers. Even without the sling, the stuff is just so messy to use...............the final straw was after brushing past one of the tires and staining my best pair of jeans, it went in the bin shortly after. Same applied to all other solvent based dressings. These days, the lack of longevity is not the problem I thought it was, just means I get to apply something different each wash.

Is DarkSide Solvent based? What you think of that?

Correct, Darkside is solvent based, which is why I don't use it much. I've found Darkside requires patience, the stickier consistency requires you to work it thoroughly into the sidewall, followed by a wipe down after 10 - 15 minutes. It does reward the effort, but you have to be willing to do the work.

Of all the ones I've used, it was the one I liked the least. I didn't have problems with the product separating, but I did find I could measure it's durability with a stopwatch. Unless the vehicle sat in perfectly dry sunny weather it was rather useless. In damp conditions like morning dew it would look streaky and run. It would completely wash away in even the lightest rain.

Yeah, noticed the same.

Ok, so I did a favorite list, here's my sin-bin list.......................

Stjarnagloss Gummi -one of the worst detailing products I have used, and easily the most underwhelming tire dressing. Longevity is non-existent, which is saying something from me as I usually don't care about that sort of thing. It smelt weird, and was very underwhelming during the application and the look nothing to write home about. When I sold my corded polisher last year, I actually threw this in the bag as a "bonus", the bottle virtually full. Actually, Gummi is representative for the Stjarnagloss line in general, average at best but otherwise useless.

Chemical Guys VRP - let me state that this is their best product! I actually liked the way it looked and how easy it was to apply, smooth as silk. But just like any Chemical Guys product, it just didn't last, which is of course the whole point of the brand..................you use more, then buy more. In the end, this is another product I gave away.

Turtle Wax Alphabet Soup Tire Dressing (Hybrid Solutions Graphene Acrylic Tire Shine Spray Coating) - I know this product has fans here, but I just didn't like it. For me, I found that it was hard to get looking consistent, almost like it was absorbed and dried at different rates, which left a splotchy appearance. It's cheap though.

Optimum Opti-Bond Tire Gel - As mentioned earlier, this is a thoroughly underwhelming product, which is a shame because I feel like the Optimum/Opti-Coat range has some real gems. A lack of longevity is one of the first things I noticed, a shower of rain and its gone.............completely. The application is greasy feeling, the gloss ability a touch too strong for my taste. It doesn't even have a fun scent to make it more palatable. My mostly full bottle sits at the back of the cabinet, where it has separated into two distinct colors. It may or may not be the same formula, but I far prefer the Opti-Coat version, which at least smells great and is nicer to apply.

Gyeon Q2 Tire - This is another product I'm torn with. When applied and buffed back, I absolutely loved the look of this product. But it would more often than not sling, and that got old. I guess you could lump this with the VERY similar Carpro Darkside.

If anyone wants some bedtime reading, I wrote this comparison a while ago on this topic -

Has anyone tried Armour Detail Supply Tire+ ? I have been very impressed with several of their products and I am thinking of giving this a go. Please lmk if you have any experience with it and what you think.

Thanks,
Joe

I love Carpro Darkside. Has that perfect slightly better then new tire sheen and last for a few weeks. I live on dirt road and I find the tires stay cleaner in the wet season, really seems to seal the tires for at least a month.

253 is my go to 95% of the time. I have Adam’s Graphene in the garage that hasn’t been used in a year. Maybe I’ll do that today (just finished a wash and dry, then Tec582 application). Tires are next.

Edit: still prefer 253 over Adam’s for the application process.

Adams original and Graphene are good for me.

I really liked the look of Wowo’s but it’s no longer available.

I still prefer Meguiar's Hyper Dressing. A gallon lasts me a long time mixed 3:1. Plus, the price is finally starting to come back to reality. A gallon was around $100 a year or two ago. Now it's under $60 before any discounts.

I like Griots Black Satin aerosol....its the only aerosol I've ever liked

I am always in search of my next favorite tire dressing. I have tried many but my favorites are Duragloss 253, Griots Long Lasting Tire Dressing and my recent favorite is Griots Ceramic Tire Dressing. It does last a long time and the tires do not turn brown.
I got a bottle of Meguiars Endurance Gel from the Meguiars booth at a Barrett-Jackson auction. I really wanted to like the product but it was a disaster. I used it on my truck and after driving it through a rainstorm, every bit of dressing was removed from the tires. It ended up as a thick, sticky, dirty film on the lower panels of the truck. I had to use Tarminator to remove it.

Sorry to hear this, I wouldn't even give it away...
