Really good turnout, amazing how good a black car will look when done properly.
 
Fantastic job. Rupes 21, Rupes Yellow Pad, PF2500 is a wicked combination. One of my favorites.
 
good job ! u gave me a little heads ups . I have to do my brothers range rover soon , exact same . what pads did you use ? considered hard or soft paint ?

You got that right.... a black car is exquisite when clean and such an eyesore when dirty (even just slightly)

:dblthumb2: I found the Rupes dusted the PF2500 a lot more than the LC flat pad but gave me a better result. Thanks God for a good air compressor ;)

I've tried the yellow pad on the Rupes and 4 section pass and it was corrected. I would have to say that this particular Rover had soft paint. Not as much as a Porsche but still soft (almost like the black Escalade I did a while back)

thanks for posting this, give me inspiration as I get ready to tackle my Java Black LR3.
One thing to ask, I noticed you didn't mask the numerous body contours/edges that the Land Rover vehicles have. did you have any problems using the machine over these? How would you rate the paint (clearcoat hardness) on the RR?
Also, what did you use on the black plastic trim?

The product used, polishing pad and techniques were all geared to the soft"ish" paint it has, and all would be considered light to medium in aggressiveness.

I did not tape the body lines because I took my time (not exactly production work), used a light technique (so less chance of burning through) and did not have sharp or complex edges to deal with. I approached the body line from one side and completed the work coming to the body line from the other. Very little time was spent on the edge or crossing the edge. If I did have to cross the body line I would lighten up the pressure. To be honest, I feel I could do without taping the car at all but would rather not take the chance to sling products on the trim or nick the trim with the backing plate.

The plastic trim was in good shape and only required a simple cleaning with APC.
 
Nice write up. I am doing a white Range Rover in a few weeks and it is good to know that Menzerna polishes will work on the paint. I have never detailed a Range Rover before so I was unsure of how hard the clear coat actually was.
 
Great work. Im shopping for my first polisher, I think the rupes is awesome but out of my price range. Im thinking more like the GG for now, your thoughts?.

The CC was actually lower middle soft. I normally judge it using a finger nail scratch on the clear, in an inconspicuous area I am about to polish. I will get flamed for doing so because I am instilling scratches but it has been the easiest way to determine my initial test spot combination. Some paints like black Porsches are so soft that just looking at it wrong will scratch it whereas one of the black Audi I took care of was pretty darn resilient. Don't get me wrong, as many have said before (specifically Mike Phillips), many times you will have the same car, same year, same paint and they will behave completely differently.

I have a GG6 with a 5" BP and some 5.5" LC flat pads and it does a great job. It does take a tad bit longer and vibrates more than the Rupes but both in capable hands will do a fantastic job.

No wet sanding was required on this project. It was close but a little finessing and a few extra passes in some areas and all the RIDS just disappeared.
