Live Demo - 1929 Model A Roadster


Swing by the Autogeek booth tonight at the CarSpa Car Show. I'll be showing how to restore a show car finish to this 1929 Model A Roadster. Trey and I will be there with the iVan to answer any car detailing questions and handing out fliers for this weekend's Cars & Coffee with Wayne Carini as well as Detail Fest 2015 so swing on by and say hi!

The owner says the paint feels rough like it has overspray and has lots of swirls in the paint. I'll be using the techniques for show car detailing shared in my new Flex 3401 book.

Here's the pictures from this project. note how as we progress through the pictures it goes from daylight to nighttime.

Here's the Model A right after the owner centered it in our booth.

The paint was dull overall with the normal swirls and scratches and even sanding marks that had not been removed....

I didn't spend a lot of time trying to capture the swirls but this shot doesn't do the true condition of the paint justice. I only had a few hours to knock this job out and from experience I knew I would have lots of people stopping by and asking questions and this would mean stopping my work, which is okay as that's why we're here is to answer questions but at the same time, time is short for a project like this.

Step 1: Wipe car down with Pinnacle Liquid Crystal Waterless Wash with Carnauba

No pictures of this step but it is important.


Step 2: Decontaminate the paint using a Nanoskin Medium Grade Autoscrub Pad and Pinnacle Clay Lube.


This is covered in pages 20 to 21 of my how-to book How to use the Flex 3401

The paint had a rough feel to it, the new owner thinks it's overspray paint. The Flex and the Nanoskin pad easily removed it.

Glass felt rough too so I hit it with the Nanoskin pad too....

Step 3: Compound paint using Pinnacle Advanced Compound and a 6.5 Orange Hybrid Foam Cutting Pad.

This is covered in pages 38 to 40 of How to use the Flex 3401

Hit the glass to as there was some kind of film on it....

Andy and his wife stopped by to check out what I was doing to the Model A. Andy owns a trucking company and a small collection of cars including new cars, classics, muscle cars and streetrods.

Impressed with the before and after results I asked Andy if he would like to give the Flex 3401 a try and he said "yes"

Andy and his wife stopped by Autogeek yesterday and purchased the Flex 3401 and all the pads and products I used on the Model A plus a copy of my book, How to use the Flex 3401 and The Complete Guide to a Show Car Shine

Step 2: Machine polish using the Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish and a Lake Country 6.5" White Foam Polishing pad.

No pictures, my camera guy was busy sharing this weekend's Cars & Coffee show with Wayne Carine as our special guest.



Step 3: Machine wax using the Pinnacle Liquid Souveran Wax and a Lake Country 6.5" Black Hybrid Foam Finishing Pad.

Except for the application of paint coatings I try do do everything by machine including applying both paste and liquid waxes.

And here's the beauty shots after wiping the wax off the paint using Gold Plus Jr. microfiber towels. Actually used the Gold Plus Jr. microfiber towels for every step of this project. They are a great high quality all purpose microfiber towel perfect for working on custom streetrods like this 1929 Model A

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the kind words and I probably started wiping the car down with the waterless wash around 4:30pm and was finished right at 7:30pm so about 3 hours including stopping to talk to people. The pictures show one couple, And and his wife taking and testing out the Flex 3401 but we probably had at least a dozen "stops" with different groups of people.

Lots of questions get asked when doing live buff outs and remember the majority of the people there are "Car Guys".

Loving that color! It looks even better now.

It's a really cute color for this body style plus the white interior. Has a real bumpy cam to so you know it can take care of business when she's fired up.

That's funny... I do have a great job and I really like working on cool cars. Spoke with John D'Agostino yesterday, I've known him for about 20 years but never worked on any of his cars. Hoping in the future to have that opportunity.

Here's why it helps to work out and stay fit....

Normally when I do the lower panels i teach and practice you should always be looking directly across from the panel you're buffing on. If you don't have a LIFT this means sitting on your bottom when buffing out the lower panels of a car.

That said, I don't like to put myself in that type of position with so many people walking by, looking, stopping to talk so sometimes you just have to manhandle the buffer.

It's actually isn't as expensive as some may think to have a car shipped to New Zealand from the States. Us Kiwi's do it ALOT.

I could've possibly done that if I wasn't coming to Boot Camp, not far off the same $ . . . hmmm Boot Camp . . . great little rod . . . ? Naa - I'd choose Boot Camp any day of the week!!! rops:
