Local TV channel just called and left me a message saying they want to talk to me about a feature on their web homepage.

Thats a good thing I think, I am not an official business and am not sure I am the right one for this honor.

Has anyone else done this type of interview before? Im sure someone here has. Any suggestions for me when he calls back next week? :dblthumb2:

If you're not an "official" business do you think you should be splashed across a TV station homepage?

No I dont.

As long as I am honest with the guy interviewing me, its ultimately up to them right?

I'm referring to whether you are operating an "unofficial" business and therefore don't need any publicity. If you are not meeting local laws regarding home businesses then you surely don't need to be advertising that.

I'm in public relations. First thing you'd want to find out is why they want to speak with you and how did they find you.

Publicity is a double-edged sword. Could be good for business but is there another angle here? For example, do they have a former customer that's upset and this is their consumer team wanting to get involved? (not saying that's what it is...just an example)

Since it's their web group is it a written piece...If so, ask them if they could email you questions and you'll get right back to them...this would be the safest way to participate...It would give you a chance to think through your answers....And just remember to answer their questions but whatever your answer is keep it succinct...They only have so much space for quotes or a sound bite...You'll be edited down...best to do that on your own.

Good luck, let us know how this goes!

Thanks both of you. Duly noted

Well, if is an "unofficial" business not meeting Federal, State, County, City laws, it is too late to worry about publicity. Posting to this forum took care of that.

It's a lot more likely the relevant authorities are going to notice a story on a local news website than be reading this forum.

Yeah, its not like there is some major secret. I am a hobbyist. Not sure I am breaking the laws. In NY you are allowed to make $600 without claiming it and who even says I dont claim the income in the first place? There is a line on your 1040 for "other income".
Theres no need to harp on the "illegal business" thing. Im just saying I dont have a legit small business in my definition.

a lot of people think when they're features on a webpage they're business/phone calls are going to sky rocket you into being booked 24/7

but in most cases, it doesnt

so lets say OP gets ~1000

people to actually take action will be..... very very slim

i'd say do it nonetheless... just find out exactly why they contacted you :)
