Machine waxing without claying?

I always have clayed before I machine wax. But I was thinking, those guys at car washes who apply wax with a machine would most defiantly would not be claying a car first. Never have tried it but if you washed your car, the machine wax the paint, wouldn't that just completely eat your paint alive?
Leaving scratches, and swirls?
Even if you used a waxing or finishing pad?

Not if the paint had not compiled any:
"unwashable"-contaminates...since the last detail-session that included decontamination processes.

Regardless:
A "Baggie test" would definitely be in order. Always!

I dont think it would matter much to the paint..what you may do is wear your pad more. The clay makes the surface two things

CLEAN: To help the wax / LSP stick
SMOOTH: That lessens the friction of what ever you are polishing/waxing with...I will never again hand wax without clay first, there is no need for all the elbow grease waxing over the above surface contaminates.
