Making the Metallic Flake Pop! - Popping versus Muting

Mike,

I know you say ANY quality wax will bring out the metallic after proper prep work, but do you have any specific products that work best? Carnuba, Sealant, both? Specific products?

I ask because I have practically a brand new car in a metallic medium grey color and I'm looking for something to really make it "pop" as you say.

When I say "any" quality wax I mean any quality "finishing" wax, sealant or coating.

A finishing product would be a product that offers no cleaning or abrading ability, be it chemical, solvent or abrasive. Using a cleaner/wax on a finish that is already polished is working backwards.

You always want to be working forwards in the process.

Any wax, sealant or coating that makes black look clear and dark would work. The opposite would be any product that clouds or makes black duller or hazy would not work.

I discuss the difference between finishing waxes and cleaner/waxes in this article...

And keep in mind, the term wax as I use it in the sentence above the link is used in the generic form to represent any type of protection product be it an actual wax, synthetic paint protectant or hi-tech coating.

...Which, by the way:
I personally don't know where to begin to thank you enough, Sir, for not only compiling these lists, but sharing them as well!!

Here's a few of my favorite finishing waxes/sealants that, IMHO, will do right by you:

Hope this helps a little.

Just my experience but I did notice a muting effect from 845 on top of PB EX-P. It a was very subtle difference and I wouldn't have noticed it if I wasn't comparing two panels right next to each other.

Id like to know,
(1)If i can enhance the flake pop by using a glaze to mask swirls after a thorough claying session.

(2) does the nature(natural or synthetic) of the wax used after the glazing/polishing affect the flake pop.

currently i am using meguiars #26 for my cars.

IMO a good sealant will make that metallic POP! I suggest DG #111 followed up with some DG Aqua Wax for instance. CG Blacklight is another good choice, followed up with V7. I have and have used both with great sucess BUT.....prep is everything, gotta clay and polish the paint good, without it the grit and swirls will just tone down your paints potential, period!

Mike, I like to know about

what's the meaning of clarity on result from detailing?
And compounding step is important to make the clarity?
If on soft paint, it's must doing compounding step to make the clarity?

Thank You

Mike, how are these examples of my recent details. My Jeep in silver. A Honda CRV in silver. A Mercury Milan in pearl white. A Camry in gold.

Re: Making the Metallic Flake Pop!

Looks good! How did you get it that way?

I see forum members always talking about how some waxes make the flake pop while other waxes make the mute the flake but if you want the flake to pop you first have to start with being able to see it.

:)
What waxes muted the flakes? I am actually looking for a wax that will mute my metallic black paint job

I finally was able to fit a proper de-winter wash and shine over the course of 2 weeks! Pressure-washed, foamed, and carefully cleaned every panel using two-bucket method (2BM), and used blow-dry method to dry

It is Black Sapphire Metallic, 2-year old X5, with
GTechniq C1 (single coat)
GTechniq EXO V2 (2 coats)

My honest opinion, the appearance is a bit "muted" even with the EXO V2 topping, it looks like the whole vehicle is wrapped with XPel/3M

I just cannot believe my eyes, how is it possible. I used from cheap butter wax CG to Collinite 915 and never could achieve anything like this. Slickness and reflection yes, but never 3D flake pop.
Well, now my daily is soul red metallic I don't know if anything I can do similar to this?!
