I've seen pics of an extention that is used on a makita that looks to be about 4 in long with a small bp and pad to get into small areas. Where can a person get one of these?

Are you talking about these extensions in the middle/ bottom of this page? If so, those are custom made. Give the op in that thread a PM to see if he has anymore left.

I dont like the regular adapters because of the hex body. The custom ones made in the link above are smooth so if you were to accidental bump into something your wont be gouging any paint out.

Oooh...i didn't know there was an extremely long adaptor. With a rotary, this is going to be harder to control i assume, and i can only imagine how more difficult it would be with a DA. Is it Alan? Have you tried it?

This gave me an idea. I'll try to have adaptors fabricated locally to see feel how they work.

I can't really see somebody using an extension on a DA as the vibrations would make controlling it a bit harder to control but on a rotary its not that difficult.
I dont have the long 4" extensions but I have doubled up the regular one that you posted. On a rotary it's not hard or difficult at all to control. The only real difference is keeping the pad flat as it becomes more sensitive when tilting the polisher.
You could easily fabricate one yourself or get one a machine shop to do it for you.

Thanks for the feedback, Alan. If it feels the same as the regular one, then this is a must have accessory. Will definitely try it out soon.

I have found use for some extensions and have made up a few and purchased a few. This one was purchased from 3M. As linked above in the AG link.
This one I made with a piece of all thread and an all thread coupler and a jam nut all purchased from Ace Hardware for under $10 I had to do some cutting to length of the all thread to suit my needs.
This one I purchased from Berubes Chrome shop in New Hampshire and cut a short piece of all thread and used a jam nut to couple the backing plate to it. It is sold with a bolt for use with the wheel in the other photo below. This adapter cost me $10.95 and most "good" chrome shops will carry it.
This last one is simply another all thread coupler added with a longer piece of all thread and a jam nut, again 1 ten inch section of 5/8" 11 all thread, 2 5/8" 11 jam nuts and 2 5/8" 11 all thread couplers all for under $10 at Ace hardware.

I would like to add that the longer you go with these extensions, the more likely it is that you will break the gear housing on the polisher so if you intend to use extensions often it might be a good idea to order up a spare gear housing and a set of bearings and seals for it.
