Oh it can be done manually, but with machine you will take about 3-4 hours for the car, hand you're looking at around 12-15 to achieve a swirl free finish.

Good luck and hope your hands are in great shape!
I used Meg's Ultimate compound working by hand to get rid of the swirls, it could be my skills (lack of it), but the results were strictly average! So working with a machine is the best I guess, with hand it appears very difficult to achieve a swirl free finish.

pick up a DA, you'll wish you would of done it alot sooner (you're gonna have to pull the trigger someday, right?). i think most everyone feels the same way at first, but when you use it within an hour or so (maybe even sooner), you'll see why you should of picked one up a long time ago. if you're strapped for cash and want something local (and find yourself only using it once or twice a year), pick up the harbor freight DA (around $50 w/ coupon), though you'll need to pick up a 5" DA backing plate and 5.5" pads. they have a 90 day return policy and if you don't still feel like you don't need it (doubt you will), you can always return it. go to harborfreightdotcom and type in dual action polisher (or type in 69924) and you'll find it...

Well they are both very good machines and will get the job done well. I have heard that the PC 7424xp is better and more powerful then the Megs DA.
I would recommend you look at the Griots Garage GG3 DA, it has more power than the 7424 and is extremely durable.
What pads were you thinking of?

the pcxp, g110v2 and GG6 are all great choices, you really can't go wrong with any of them. the GG6 would be my first choice if i had to choose between the three and the warranty is great as well. it will pay for itself within the first or second use, and the results you'll achieve will far exceed anything you can ever do by hand. there couldn't be a better time to get into machine polishing now. just treat yourself, the holidays are here and you've been good right?

Well in all honesty, I would look at getting a kit!
We are all novices at some point, I started with a wolfgang kit myself
I would recommend this for you:

Also having a handfull of micro fibre will be required

Doing it by machine will save you time and product, if your doing a car for profit, all your profit will be lost if you do this by hand. Shine on.
