I bought a new set of wheels and they are matte black. My question is can I put opticoat or 22ple wheel coating on it or are they made for gloss painted only

As to Opti-Coatings:
From this link: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/new-car-care-products/36252-cquartz-opti-coat-2-0-matte.html
It will add some gloss, but you cannot be sure how much without doing a test spot.
If you like the matte look, apply with caution.

I asked Dr. G about it for a customer's matte rims a while back and he said
it will change the appearance, but the amount will vary by what you're coating.
It will definitely not create a "high" gloss, but it will no longer be fully matte.

As to 22ple:
I suggest contacting: Todd Cooperider of "Esoteric Detailing".

I'll also suggest looking towards:
Swissvax, Dr. Beasley’s, Nanolex for your matte cleaning/protection-products needs.

22ple VM1 will add a light "glow" to matte wheel finishes. Gloss is definitely enhanced, but I see no compatibility issues between VM1 and matte paints.

I bought some opti-coat to do my matte black rotas. I wish I had done this when they were new. Can't seem to get the stains and dirt out of them now. They get very dirty easily.

How did the opticoat turn out on your rims?

It just came in the mail. Gotta figure out how to remove all the grime first. Sonax did a mediocre job on the wheel I tried it on. Looked clean while wet but still quite hazy when dry. I scrubbed it good too with the daytona brush. The first wheel I washed with car shampoo and a brush and then applied 2 coats of mothers cleaner wax looks awesome. Satin finish looks perfect but without the wax it looked like #### just like this one after sonax.

I'm also curious if there's a better way to clean matte black wheels. I just got a set of flat black Rotas as well. My usual cleaning techniques, highly effective on OEM wheels, leave brake dust embedded in the Rotas. Maybe the non-clearcoated surface is more porous or textured, compared to the smooth slick surface of a clearcoated finish?

I have flat black XD Monsters and I'm having trouble as well. I think I'm going to have to take each wheel of the truck and spend a lot of time to get them clean. They are only 4 months old and already have break dust that won't come off. I wish I had put sealant on right from the start!!

I have the xd black rockstars and your statement about being that hard to clean really cements my question about coating them. I am leaning toward the 22ple metal coating for them

I have the Poor Boys wheel sealant. I have never used it before but it has some good reviews here on the forum. I'm going to take each wheel off and spend some time getting them clean. I'm worried I will seal them with brake dust still on them. Love the rock stars also!!

I wouldn't use acid on matte black. You could run into an issue with staining. I would try some iron x or brake dust professional followed by some diluted all purpose cleaner. A pressure washer will help your cause as well.

^^^I suppose it all depends on how "matte" you want your wheels to remain.^^^
I personally would want to use products specifically designed/formulated
for maintaining the original-matte-appearance. That's just me, though.

They may be considered a little more expensive than other car-care-products...
But I say it's a small price-differential to pay for such a substantial investment.

Someone mentioned that Scholl's Concept now has matte care products.
If I remember correctly...Chemical Guys has some too.

What did you guys end up using on your matte rims? I just put a set of fuel kranks in the matte black finish on my truck and would like to get some type of sealant on them before they become impossible to keep clean.

I used two coats of Pinnacle Black Label Diamond Wheel Coating on my matte black wheels. It did not alter the matte finish at all.

Thanks I will have to look into this, haven't seen the pinnacle black label diamond wheel coating mentioned for matte black wheels.

No problem. I saw where someone used it in another thread but I can't remember which one it was. I figured it would increase the shine of the matte black a little more but I didn't see a difference at all. Only had it on for a week so I can't give any feedback on durability but so far so good!
