Megs #83 or #2

I was looking for a little more cut to use with a white or orange pad, or I might get the HT tangerine pad. I currently use m205 and need more cut I dont need something like #105. I have some swirls I want to take out.

according to this chart #83 sits at just what I am looking for. Does anyone here use #83?

They actually have about the same or similar cut. M02 was reformulated back in 2005 to meet the new VOC laws taking place in 2006 and the original formula for #2 that had been around for probably decades before I was born could not be made VOC compliant so it was completely changed, not tweaked.


Actually, with M105 or Ultimate Compound it's only aggressive as long as you work it, you can stop buffing at any time and thus stop abrading, it's actually quite safe. Don't think "rocks in a bottle" type technology, this is a SMAT product.

Taught hundreds of classes using M83 and M80 for Meguiar's at the Corporate Office from 2002 to 2009 but don't use it any longer. It works but it can leave micro-marring when used with a DA style polisher.

If you want a more aggressive polish and not a compound, get a bottle of Menzerna SI 1500

Thanks again Mike, I already have some UC, I just I will try that first with a white pad. I am afraid too many corrections can ruin the clear on a Honda.

When Megs introduced SMAT products they kind of threw a monkey wrench into the old philosophy of,

"Use the least aggressive product to get the job done"


The above is STILL a good approach to take but with DAT product you supposed to work them until they break down before stopping or it's possible the abrasives could leave marring or scour the paint because they have not fully broken down.

With SMAT products, because they are super microscopic in size and compared to diminishing abrasives don't break down this means you can stop at any point in the buffing cycle.

Hey, at least things are changing in the ol paint polishing world...

Just adding some comments since I did a side-by-side comparison of these two products as my first hobbyist experiment using my DA buffer. This was my first use of the DA, but for me I saw significantly quicker correction from the M83. This was using the Meguiars G110v2 and their yellow softbuff 2.0 pads. Anyway, take this as one person's experience. Car is a 2006 Subaru WRX.

My comments from the experiment:
I decided to do a side-by-side on my hood using the M2 (Fine cut cleaner) and M83 (Dual Action Cleaner Polish) products.

Using a brand new polishing pad I ended up doing 2 passes with the M2 since I was a bit unsure of my technique on the first pass. I did notice some improvement of the fine scratches. But I saw that with 1 pass of the M83 on a slightly used pad the results were better than the two passes of the M2. I also did a second pass with the M83 on that test panel and the improvement continued.

Notes: the M2 seemed to dry out quickly and the M83 seems pretty slick at times (the pad would stop spinning) so I probably need to refine either my technique or probably the amount of product. The M83 got a bit dusty once the edge of the pad began to dry out, but I guess that's to be expected.

One last note is that one or both of these products got splattered onto my fenders and I still have tiny dots that I haven't taken the time to remove (from back in February and several washes later).
