Meguiar's Hot Rims Brake Dust Barrier Review and Testing

Nice thread, lots of work went into setting up the test, then doing the tests as well as documenting and photographing before and after results.

Nice job.

One comment, the Meguiar's Brake Dust Barrier isn't supposed to repel brake dust and road grime, at least not to my understanding of how the product works, it's just supposed to be barrier film between the world and the wheel surface protecting the wheel surface and making it easier to remove both road grime and brake dust.

If it does this then it's accomplishing the goal plus protecting the wheel surface from corrosion.

I have it applied to a set of Honda wheels for a long term test, (long term because the car is not washed often), but I may try this product out on my polished aluminum mag wheels after the next polishing and see how it does...

Excellent review!

I've been using it on my wheels that are painted and its great since it acts like spray wax, makes my wheel's paint pop and makes it easier to clean later on. I've reduced the usage of my wheel cleaner to once every 2 weeks. Saves a lot of product and doesn't corrode the surface. Some have suggested chrome wheels don't do well and it reduces shine but I haven't seen any issues on the cars I've worked on so far. Makes wheels pop like crazy!

Only thing the wheels need to be dry or the water messes up the finish when it dries up.

I know bumping an old thread. my FoST produces lots of brake dust, and my local Kmart had this stuff on sale for $2.50 a can so I bought some. Now for a couple questions. How far does the product go? Will one can do 4 wheels? Should I remove the wheels from the car do get the back side and 'inside' part of the wheel that you can see but cant really get to when on? How often do you need to reapply?

How far does it go? Not sure what that questions means. It acts as a great barrier so I don't have to spend a ton of Sonax getting my wheels cleaned up. I'd say it makes follow up washes and getting brake dust off very easy.

1 can should do about 10 cars depending on the wheels. If it has a multi spoke design it will need more product to evenly coat it.

When you do the one a year through cleaning you can. Just know it will wear off over the course of washes and use. Proper cleaning techniques should keep the back of the wheels clean over time.

I use it every week after the car has been washed and the wheels have been cleaned. This product can sit over the crud you don't wash off so I'd say use after a good cleaning. Also DO NOT touch while wet.

I wouldn't put sealant on my car unless I clayed it so the same goes for this product. Unless I clean the wheel properly and dry it well I'm not going to use this product.

It does not react well with water and leaves white marks all over the wheels that come off when washed but defeat's the purpose so was and wait. I wait a day but that's because I drive my car home and that get's most of the water off.

It leaves a nice waxed type gloss and wheels with prior paint damage like etching , it does a great job of masking. Makes my wheels look great before a show and easy to clean up the next weekend.

It's really odd. The AA repels the dust, but allows for pockets of dust to collect. The Megs repels dust but allows for the dust to settle in a very uniform pattern, giving the illusion that the wheel isn't dirty.

No offense, but I use the Armour All product and to my trained eye, it looks like those pockets are areas you either missed when applying it, or brushed something against the wheel removing the product.

In my experience the armour all will repel everything on areas where it has been applied and bonded, But its weakness is that areas you miss or did not bond will stick out like a sore thumb. Also nothing adheres it to the surface, anything that touches the wheel ever so slightly will remove it.

I can see how you would think that, I didn't miss anything or brush against anything. I removed the rim from the wheel. Washed it, Iron X, master blast, Clay, IPA. AA was applied evenly like spray paint and allowed to cure. Brake dust behaves like this on the 5 series and the AA, but not on my other 2 cars.

Interesting.

If you are still using it - next time the dust gathers like that try something for me? Just blast it with a leaf blower dry to see if the dust is just settling there and will blow off easily?
