Do you guys know where the Megs polisher is assembled?

To me, a company like Megs should be embarrassed to send out a tool with an inferior cord assembly.

And I'll bet the farm it was to save a few cents per unit.

When will these companies learn that product reliability and/or their reputation with the consumer trumps greed for profits?

Oh, listen to me.......... Forgot what era I was living in for a minute. :(

What's more peculiar is they had the same issue with the G110v2, ask me how I know

Anyway Brian Han of Meguiar's mentioned to me that they have since started using a better process and better quality components to fix the issue.

Well, really the worst part of this is there was, if I'm remembering this right, the Ultimate Detailing Machine, which was a lot like the G110v1, which had this problem with the cords as well. Then Meg's came out with the v2, which was supposed to fix all the problems, but didn't. Then the MT300...same cord problems...it's like they just can't figure it out at the Chinese plant where these are made. I wouldn't hold my breath about the MT300 being fixed, these problems go back like 10 years. Of course it would be nice if they have finally solved it....but what took so long? It's not like corded power tools are a new thing, they've been making them for about 100 years.

The sad part is the MT300 is a great 8mm da, the "cruise control" feature really worked. I'm a Megs fanboy and bought the G110v2 and had issues, moved on to the Flex and Rupes. My wife surprised me with a MT when they came out for my birthday, I figured Megs must have fixed this issue and used it 2 times before the cord failed, paid to ship it to Megs. I got it backed and after 4-5 uses same thing plus I had a batch of 5" mf cutting pads that kept ripping the Velcro off. Really soured me on Megs but they stood by the mf cutting discs by sendings me the made in the US ones.

Here is the email response from Brian Han that I received after the cord went out the second time. It sounds like they believe the issue is resolved. Can't say since I don't work in the repair facility.

Mike,

Sorry to hear that. Yes, the machine is certainly still under warranty. Since your machine was sent in last we have updated the cord and sleeve in hopes that will fix this issue. The other parts were not poor quality but we are hopeful these small changes will allow the cord to function better over time. You will need to send the machine to our repair facility as you did last time. Please reference Feedback # on a note placed in the box with the machine. In case you do not have the address still it is…

it seems that all the megs DA's with the exception of the G100 (rebranded pc7424) have been plagued with cord issues. even if the mt300 is a good polisher, i couldn't bring myself to purchase one because the one year warranty would go by quick especially for some who would only use it a few times a year. for the cost of it ($200) they should offer at least a 2-3 year warranty on it...

I'm sure if you go over to Autopia you can find G110 threads from 10 years ago where people posted the CS responses about how they have fixed the problem.

Good of you to share that email, Guz.

But, that, to me, just insults the intelligence. "Not poor quality"?? Really? It's a simple 3-wire jacketed cord.

That, to me, falls under the "Don't piss down my back & tell me it's raining" category.

Not bashing Megs, but a BS answer is a BS answer.

This machine has always had cord issues. I remember when they made the box too short and kinked the cord in the back. Enough people complained they fixed it. There were quite a few times I almost bought it but didn't. Glad I got Rupes

I would have bought this machine but they did a crap job making it "professional" if I can't rely on it daily, it's junk.

Oh how many times were you gonna buy it or not?... Just buy it already. [I'm not seriously suggesting you do because you've obviously made your mind up] But at least you'd be giving us your actual take based on 1st hand experience with the polisher...

As far as it not being a professional grade polisher? I'd strongly disagree with that. All you have to do is look at the specs, design, and ergonomics that went into the tool. Not to mention something that doesn't seem to come along as often or get enough credit and that's originality. Name another polisher that even slightly resembles the MT300 or that it blatantly copied? [not pointing any fingers] You can't, because it truly was designed with the detailer and his/her comfort in mind unlike any other polisher in its class.

As far as it being "junk"?
Well I can tell you based on my own hands on experience having used the MT300 numerous times that it's far from "junk" and I've never seen any of the dozen or so polishers ever have even a slight hiccup in all the time I've spent around them being used non stop during TNOG for the past couple of years since they've been available.

Have you ever even used the polisher? Or are you just going off heresy?
Also, just because you've heard/read a few complaints on the internet regarding 1 flaw that the tool may have doesn't mean that every polisher that rolled off the assembly line has gotten recalled or something.. We don't even know what percentage suffer from the problem. All we do know is that Meguiars has decided to address the issue, which is better than them not addressing it, right?

But the biggest thing that bugs me, and the main thing I'd like to say is this:
I can't help but wonder how different things/opinions would be if Meguiars had decided to offer a lifetime warranty with this polisher, the same way Griots Garage does with theirs... How many posts have we all read or heard of in regards to any of the Griots polishers clunking out for 1 reason or another? A whole lot. Does anyone ever call them "junk"? Why not? A breakdown's a breakdown isn't it?
I suppose the MT300 wouldn't be "junk" if it broke down at twice the rate, as long as they kept fixing it for you for life?? Give me a break... What do you Really value? Don't knock it till you try it.

Just my 2 cents.

If I had an assistant or some other reason I would go ahead and buy it anyway. I've heard of a lot of other people get this polisher and it having cord issues. I used to be on megs online forum and people were complaining they bought it new and the cord broke Meguiars said the box was too small and crammed to cord so they fixed it, then users still had issues. This was spread over a long time. So yes it's heresy. What I mean by junk is if you rely on a machine and have to stop working to send it in more than once then it's "junk"

If we were to go by those rules then a certain beloved polisher that can and according to countless posts has been sent back for repairs [whether for normal wear & tear or users fault] would be considered junk[?] But since I've never heard a story of the HF DA breaking down it would be considered the gold? Lol.

It's unfortunate for the MT300 that it's got a bit of tainted rep... Because it's a solid 8mm polisher in every other way.

With the cord replaced on my MT 300, I have no complaints

I think the reason a cord issue is so frustrating to some of us is that the cord is the basic and common item in every corded power tool since they started making them, whether it's a drill, a jigsaw, a circular saw, a polisher, or heck, even a vacuum. So the fact that this basic element of the technology seemingly can't be mastered is just baffling. Maybe the solution is for Meg's to make a cordless polisher :p

Well, like you said, Eldo... Unfortunate. But like Setec said, and I posted in this thread also, if you can't get a basic power cord (and/or the connections/rheostats) dialed in, then yes.... Your product, no matter its potential capability, will be labeled by the public as "junk".

Is this the only machine in this category (as you mentioned)? Oh, Hell no.

In my line of work, There have been many, many outboard engines, pumps, electronics, two-part repair systems, bilge pumps, etc. That have all been of sound design with one or two fatal (albeit fixable) flaws that resulted in those products being labeled as "junk" by frequent users of the product, and who were of the assumption that the simplest parts of the product would not fail.

And it takes a while after the said manufacturer addresses these problems for the "junk" rep to disappear. (If that is even possible in this internet rumor age).

Just wonder how the man or woman who Ok'd the cheaper cord assembly feels now. If, in fact they are still employed.

:/

I agree with Eldorado. The tool works great. Good ergonomics and good power.

Sure the cord is a short coming. But it doesn't mean it's junk. More like flawed.

But perhaps it's only the first machines that were plagued with this issue. Hard to say without being in the Meguiar's warehouse.

I upgraded due to frustration. Glad I did. But I digress.

The warranty is only 1 year but isn't the Rupes warranty only 1 year as well. I don't have my book in front of me to confirm.

Agreed, Guz. I was just pointing out the public perception of a widespread failure.

I'm sure without the cord issue, the machine works great.
