Meguiar's New Ultimate Wax- Paste

To quote Michael Stoops on MOL
"...almost like applying warm, partially melted butter."

i gotta go there... butter smears less. I don't know how on earth, anyone is applying this paste wax without it streaking.

I have it, i like Meguiars, but it streaks. I have a black car, and yes, I probably see it more than someone with a light color car, but it is somewhat smeary, even if applied ultra thin.

I have an absolutely huge collection of lsp's so I do have an idea of applying thin coats.

As stated before "The application experience is very different, almost like applying warm, partially melted butter."
How long did you wait before removing it?
Did you try very lightly misting a MF cloth with water and wiping the surface?

BTW - I have a fairly large collection of LSP's on my shelf myself. I have about everything made from Adams to Zaino (A-Z)
I've had a learning curve w/many of the products. Zaino is one that comes to mind. Mix, shake, wait, use a dime size drop etc.

This is definitely a "Thin-to-Win" product. Did you apply the UWax paste by hand or with a DA?
Have you tried wiping the surface after UW removal with a lightly H2O misted microfiber cloth?
Although I personally have not tried the paste version I have heard the H2O misted MF works.

Fwiw, its only the newer Meguiars waxes that I have trouble applying without smearing.

I think I'm going to have to give up on Meguiars as far as their lsp's go.

thanks again (i hear what ya' mean on the a-z)

Impressive list!!! No Dodo???

i have the "test tube"... and many other samples.

this list was a list of lsp's i posted on another site just to lend some credibility to my post (that i have used a good deal of lsp's and understand thin application).

i've got the sickness...bad.lol

applying with DA and CCS gold pad may help...you'll go really thin you can only see the film under the sun or led torch..

or the wax simply react badly with the base or sensitive to moisture what have you put as a base ?

Interesting about the streakyness. I've not experienced any so far but I've only used it on a silver car. Our black car has UPGP on it right now, maybe some time in the future I'll strip a panel and try the Ultimate Wax (I have the paste version btw).

One thing that might help is buffing it again after 12 hours. That is usually my process with sealants after they've cured.

I haven't tried Ultimate Wax and am not likely to. I already own several synthetic sealants that I like and I will stick with them until they run out. I own a bottle of NXT. I haven't used it on my black car since I got my bottle of Blackfire Wet Diamond. I have only had NXT streak on me once, but I'm confident that it was due to user-error--I applied it too thick. NXT needs to be applied thin and evenly (which is why so many like to apply it via a polisher) and it needs to be given sufficient time to set-up before removal (30+ minutes). From what I have read over at MOL, it sounds like the same considerations apply to UW. Every protectant has a learning curve.

Michael Stoops has recommended the following if streaks should appear with UW:

Here's a little tip at wipe off: if you find any visual unevenness after wiping it off (slightly darker patches due to inconsistencies in thickness of application) then very light spray some plain water onto a clean, dry microfiber towel and wipe the car down as a quick follow up. And by "very lightly spray" we mean exactly that. In fact, spraying a mist in the air and catching it with the towel is sufficient. Definitely don't over do it here. What happens is the polymers are still quite dynamic on the surface immediately after wipe off, and if they aren't pretty evenly distributed you may see some slightly darker patches because of it. That very lightly damp microfiber helps to shift things around, evening out the layer.

I'm looking forward to reading the reviews. Even though I will not be purchasing the product in the near future, I'm hoping Meguiar's has a winner with Ultimate Wax.

when i refer to streakiness, it is better described as the ability to continously spread the polymers when wiping, or "smearing".

the idea is that ultimate wax is supposed to be "ultimate" and is aimed @ the consumer, not someone who is likely to have a da and ccs gold pads. I understand what you mean though.

after im done polishing my car to perfection, and applying an lsp, i don't want to have to wait 12 hours before i can see it without smearing in the sun. I get what you mean, but imo, that is far from "ultimate".

Michael stoops has only recently recognized that nxt often does the same thing (smearing under inspection light), and yes, I'd imagine going over the car with distilled water may straighten things out, put do you think a consumer has distilled h20 on hand, and will want to take the time to go over the whole car again with distilled h20?

I know how to apply an lsp "thin". There is a point, however, that applying the sealant so thin ultimately leads to missed spots, and spots w/out enough protection imo.

I certainly agree with your point that the ordinary consumer does not want to have to go back over the wax with a damp cloth to remove streaking. Heck, I don't want to have to do that either--and I'm not an ordinary consumer. I too have a shelf full of various waxes and sealants.

I can say that I have experienced streaking and hazing on my black car with several different products. I assume that in most cases I simply have not applied and removed the product properly, but I don't think this is always the case. Some waxes and sealants are just finnicky, especially on black cars, and that includes several expensive carnauba waxes. Black shows everything, doesn't it? I never have problems on my silver-blue CR-V.

As mentioned, when I want to use a sealant on my black car, I usually reach for my Blackfire Wet Diamond. I find it unfinnicky and very user-friendly, but it too can streak under certain conditions.

I have never experienced streaking with Mother's Reflections or Meguiar's M20. Both seem to be idiot-proof.

I will be interested to see whether others experience streaking as a major problem with Ultimate Wax.

akimel-

if you look on the previous page of this thread, I've tried a great deal of sealants, and although you are into BFWD right now (which i have {and like} but i don't think i listed it)...if you get the bug to try some less finicky lsp's try:

CG's Factory seal (i use this on glass it is so streak free)
Autoglym EGP (one of my favorites)
Prima Epic
Optimum Opti-Seal

LOL. Now I want to go buy some UW just to see if it streaks on me! :D

Once I dialed in the application of NXT I no longer had streaking issues.

I've used the Meguiars Ultimate Paste Wax on the girlfriends black Sonata about a month ago. I got some of the Ultimate Polish and used it on the Flex with red LC Hydro Pad and must say it's very easy to use and left a flawless finish. I followed it with the Paste Wax, hand applied and it was very easy to use and remove with no streaking issues. I did this work in my garage and I would say the temp was in the mid 50's and no humidity to speak of. I gave the car a good washing this past Sunday and it's still holding up very well. I like the stuff...

I havent faced any issues with streaking with NXT 2.0. Could be because i apply it really thin & allow atleast 45 mins for it to dry completely !

I find it perfoms better when applied with a Flex 3401 + red pad combo ! Buffed it off with almost any kind of MF, no issues faced :xyxthumbs:

Havent used it myself yet but some over on MOL say its the same streaky mess as NXT.

I hope its not the same as NXT(durability and streaky-ness wise)

Again, if its more durable than NXT2.0, I'll definitely be trying it!

Mr. Stoops mentioned the streakiness problem should be easily solved, but I have not read the reviews.

He also said it is more durable that either NXT 2.0 or M16.

I've had some streaking issues in the past with NXT and M21, but it was usually an issue with black paint and usually humid summer conditions. It was never enough that I stopped using them, I would usually have to give them another wipedown with a QD mist in those areas. M21 was my go to LSP on details...

I'm not the only one who got streaking btw. (quotes only from this site)^

the streaking I am referring to is in direct sun, hologram like smears. they are the type visible when you are moving, and catch the sun just right.

you guys must just be better @ applying waxes than I am, and may even be better @ applying waxes than Mr. Stoops, as he even admits smearing with both nxt (under inspection lights) and the ultimate paste.

i give up on the Meguiars waxes. I've applied them thin... very thin... to the point that there may be question as to whether I was missing spots. I've dont the "swipe test", sometimes hours after applying. still no luck.

btw...meguiars is targeting ultimate wax to consumers, not those with the flex and red lc pads etc.

I gave up on their waxes after the second version of NXT. I'm not sure if they are trying too hard to bridge the gap between consumer and professional or if they are trying to be the "end all" to OTC products? And by that I mean "it's Meguiar's or nothing" on store shelves.

Marketing is very crucial and I understand their drive behind it, the name depends on it. But, you better make sure your products deliver the expectations of your hype. I don't frequent MOL so I have no idea what the reviews are like there. Time will only tell how the new products deliver. I guess the next item to fall under scrutiny is the DA micro fiber system, when it's released of course.

you mean that "ultimate wax" better be "ultimate"? lol

i have to wonder what comes after ultimate?

Here's a couple of pics...I used the liquid...no streaking for me
