Are the Meguiars products that come in purple bottles at the big box stores formulated to be applied by hand?

Yes, those products in the maroon colored bottles are mainly for use by hand.

They work great by machine too.

I believe the Rubbing Compound and Polishing Compound in the maroon were intended for hand application explicitly.
