Good super sleuthing....

Great info FUN

I just don't think of them as in the same class as the modern stuff like Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant

Here is Mike P's thread over on Meguiar's Online. Some good info:

Is it a wax? Or a paint sealant?

Wow! Almost hard to believe I wrote that almost 7 years now...

I just scanned what I wrote but I'm pretty sure it's just as accurate today as when I wrote it.

^^^True^^^

Difference:
M21 can also be used with a rotary.
NXT: Not recommended for use with a rotary.

Bob

And just to note... when a product is stated that it can be used with a rotary some people think that automatically means it can be used with a rotary and you'll get great results, as in zero holograms but this isn't true.

A lot of the directions printed on the label of Meguiar's Pro products are written for the professional side of the industry that is still very archaic or caveman. Sure you can use M21 with a rotary buffer and the product will buff on and buff off.

Will there be holograms? If you use any type of aggressive pad be it foam or fiber then I'd say "yes" there will be holograms. The directions never said there wouldn't be any holograms it just says the product can be applied using a rotary.

Historically the professional side of the detailing industry is known for swirling out cars.

It's the "Internet" side or the discussion forum side of the industry that is known for NOT swirling out cars and that's because our people don't as a habit apply products like M21 with a rotary.

Also, for what it's worth... when I wrote the Zaino Case Study, page 31 offered a solution to the problem which was at that time Meguiar's did not have any pure synthetic products to compete against Zaino Z1 and Z2. So from my background after working for Hewlett-Packard specifically proper "meeting protocols", I didn't just use the Zaino Case Study to point out the problem, but I included my suggestion for a solution which was to introduce an all synthetic sealant to compete against Zaino.

This is where NXT Tech Wax came from. The only people at Meguiar's that ever gave me credit for the idea on page 31 are,

  • Atticus Firey
  • Richard Koeth
  • Unarmed person
I have stories... someday I should share them in the forum world.

Of course "Marketing" turned my idea for a single product into a product line to go after the "Next Generation" which at that time was a push for the Tuner crowd.

Sal Zaino told me the only year he saw his sales go down was in 2004 when NXT was launched. I worked very hard on the Zaino Case Study and I was and still am very proud of what NXT Tech Wax did in it's day. For example,

NXT Tech Wax the Number One Selling Liquid Wax in America!

NXT Tech Wax went from ZERO sales numbers (because it was a brand new product), to the number one selling wax in America in August of 2004. That's 8 months after it was released and no retail wax in the history of car waxes has ever done anything like this.

My friends in marketing let me know it rocked the marketing gurus in the big retail wax companies. It also broke all the rules, things like flying off the shelf and selling out in January of 2004 when the start of car wax season is traditionally in May.

I could go on but that's enough....

:)

Wow, Time flies by. I remember trying NXT when it first came out doesnt seem that long ago then I also remember using it on my 99 GMC pickup that was 5-6 years old and being amazed how much life it put back into the paint (I only worked by hand then only recently graduated to Machine). Lots shine gloss depth was eye opening (for the time to a rookie). Also if memory serves me they pushed that it was NANO TECHNOLOGY that was the rage then every thing was about nano this nano that, if it was smaller it had to be better. So i guess I was one the first year users that helped those sales. Just doesn't seem that long ago, good lord time just passes so fast I need to try and enjoy live before it flashes by.

Thanks for the tips everyone. Another question. what wax can I put over the Ultimate and can I use in on the rims.
Since be reading the posts it is a sealant.

I've used M26 over UW with no issues. I am one if those that sticks with the same family. It is also ok to use UW on your wheels.

Thanks for sharing that, Mike! I really dig the historical aspect of this. It's a small glimpse into the nuts and bolts of our world. Very cool!

Same here. Although, when I use NXT 2.0, I'll top it with Gold Class. I did the NXT/GC combo to one of my neighbor's cars in late june / early july, and it's still beading. I'll do another coat in October for that car.

That's interesting stuff posted about NXT and Zaino. I was using Zaino back then and did buy some NXT,mostly because I didn't have to pay shipping so I'd thohgt I'd give it a try out. I did however go back to Z-2, for what ever reason I felt it easier to apply and remove as I was doing everyhting by hand back then. I also felt like the Zaino beat out the NXT in durability by a month or two down here in the hot Florida sun and summer thunderstorms. But that was then and this is now and I'm all for Wolfgang 3.0, BFWD and PBL DPS.

So Mike, who was this UNARMED person who gave you props for your idea? :D

-You can put any Wax on top of ULW that you want to...
But, instead: why not just put on another coat of ULW?
-Yes: You can use ULW on rims...and wheels. :D
