Meguiars Ultimate Compound

I'd have to agree with all on this one. Though I do think it was a risky move by Meguiars to release such an aggressive product like this to the consumer line.

At least it's not rocks in a bottle like some of the other OTC compounds. :D

Well looks like the weather is going to be clear tomorrow and next week. I just got in from onr'ing so Ill be finishing everything up tomorrow.

I have some scratches that need to be taken care of so Ill get some pictures/review of UC up.

Cool! I'll keep an eye out for it.

I tried out UC today. I must say I was pretty surprised. I tried to take pictures but its so hard to take pictures of defects on my paint, especially without halogens. These are of the first defect, but I just gave up on trying to capture them after this. My camera is just waay too crappy.

I worked it by hand. My paint only had problem spots so I didnt feel like using the pc for this.

I worked it with a yellow polyfoam applicator. I primed the pad by putting about 3-4 dabs of UC on it than spreading it into the applicator. I then reapplied just one dot onto the applicator and went away at it. I started with light pressure than went with some heavy pressure and finally lightened up towards the end.

For that specific scratch it took me two passes, others only took one, with maybe one or two more taking two also.

The passes werent long though, maybe a little over minute or so, im not too sure. No holograms under the sun. It was lsp ready, but I did go over the whole car with ## EZ-Creme Glaze w/black pad to clean up everything and lay down a base for fuzion.

Now for my opinion...

This stuff is great. Does it cut as much as m105? Probably not. Does it cut as fast as m105? Definitely not. But it does cut and it cuts well. Its like m105s little brother. It wants to be just like its big brother but its not quite there yet, which is a good thing. Though m105 will have probably corrected those scratches in one pass, UC still corrected them without any further steps. I honestly dont know what they have scratchx for when they offer UC. Its great for spot defect removal. I didnt use it with the DA but im sure it would have done just as good of a job in a quicker amount of time. UC does have a place in a detailers arsenal. Want something less aggressive than m105 but need a little more correction than m205? Thats where UC fits in. Just for the record, even though I think UC would be great by DA, I cant comment yet on dusting/working time/etc on it but I assume it cant be that bad.

UC is great for anyone that cant get their hands on m105 but need a decent cut polish. You cant beat the price either. 16 oz for less than $10 with tax. Thats more than half the price of m105. I will probably be reaching for UC before m105 and leave m105 for those details that need a miracle.

I also used my Amazing roll off for the first time today. Great stuff. I wish I ordered a gallon.

As for fuzion I was surprised to see that at first it wasnt all that slick but after some time passed it was pretty slick. Love the look. My flake really pops.

Which is precisely why aspirin, and a host of other drugs, should only be available by prescription ... ;)

But before we sink too deeply into the ocean of paternalism, I wish to cast my vote for individual responsibility: the consumer still has the responsibility to learn as much as he can about a product before using it. This particular individual did not do so. And the damage would, of course, have been limited if he had only done a test spot first before applying it to the entire car. As David Bynon bluntly stated over at Autopia: "I'm sorry ... the product did not create that damage. An idiot did!"

I also suggest that "horror stories" like this one should not always be taken at face value. This individual posted his horror story on Sunday 2/7, logged-back on the next day, and hasn't returned to the forum since to find out what kind of help or coiunsel had been offered by the MOL members. To me, that speaks volumes.

I have no idea whether UC is a good product or not, but I do not believe that this one "story" should influence anyone one way or another.
Comparing the use of asprin to the use of Meguiar's Ultimate Compound is comparing apples to oranges. Most everyone knows the risk in overdosing while not that many people know the risk in incorrecly using a detailing product. Drugs (legal ones) are a common use product where as detailing supplies aren't. They are an after thought to most people.

While I agree that it is the responsibility of the individual to research and properly apply products, I don't think it was in the best interest of Meguiar's to release such a product. Research isn't in the mindset of 95% of people that can purchase and use this product. Selling Meguiar's Ultimate Compound on the mass open market is like a medical supply company selling anaesthesia and scalples OTC at Wal-Mart. Stuff is going to get messed up. While there isn't a lot of product control on the open market, nor should there be, I don't think keeping a non-common use type product with a lot of room for error with no warning label on it and sounds like it will perform mirracles off the mass open market nessecarily constitutes paternalism, IMO. Especially if they know that it is going to be incorrectly used frequently. I look at it more as good business practice.

I took that post at face value. That guy is the EXACT person out purchasing this product at his local Auto Zone and going to town on it on his whole car.

While I don't think that story should influence the purchase of UC by a knowledgable detailer (although that thread does give everyone a good idea of how to properly use it), I think it should influence the purchase of UC by a infrequent detailer or an impatient person. I hope everyone sees it.

Sorry about the pictures. I fixed it. Like i said, its extremely hard to take pictures of defects on this color
