Hey everyone. I am wondering about the chemical makeup of this product and if there are any adverse effect.

Here is the product.

Meguiars Ultimate Protectant Spray, vinyl and rubber protectant, dashboard dressing

I used the gel version once before when it first came out. IT WORKS ! and works GOOD!

Darkens the trim (plastic / rubber), and beads water. Dry to the touch.

I said I used it one time, and after I did, I was unable to do any follow up on the car that I applied it to. I was not able to see how it reacted a few weeks down the road.

I looked on the back of my bottle of the gel, and there were no specific chemical references.

Since then, I saw the spray was available and ordered it up. I just received the bottle.

Now on the back of the spray bottle under the work CAUTION!, it reads as :

*** - "CAUTION! Product contains petroleum distillate, non-ionic surfactant." - ***

I thought I read in the past that if possible, we wanted to avoid trim and tire dressing with petroleum distillate in them. ? Is this true ? and if so, why ?

If i remember correctly, the reasoning for this was because it helped promote the rubber to turn brown faster. Again, is this true ?

IMO, Meguiar's makes products that I trust and like to use. So instead of just assuming something like this is a negative thing, I figured I would ask here. For all I know, I could be completely out of line for thinking this, and its possible this could be a "urban legend" in the same fashion that thinking silicone was a bad product to have in an LSP product. Which IMO is unfounded and not true.

SO, in light of helping myself and possibly somebody else who is thinking this same way based on comments read in the past on internet forums,,, IS there anyone out there who would like to shed some light and knowledge on this topic ?

Thank you in advance.

EDIT: Not sure why the heck there is a thumbsdown in the title of the thread, but I did not purposely put that there. Maybe a mod can fix that to show no emotion icon at all please.

There are many different petroleums out there, and most detailing products contain some form of them. There are good ones and bad ones. I think it's safe to say that the latest Meguiar's products do not contain any harmful chemicals that will dry out plastics and so forth. I've yet to find any protectants on our shelves (especially newer products which lean towards more of a matte finish) that will cause any damage to plastics, so I wouldn't worry about it.
