As I said somewhere in one of these threads, I think there is a big difference in products manufactured in the manufacturer's plant in China, vs. a product that is contract-manufactured in China (of course surely there are exceptions to that, as well).

It seems to me during the time that I have been on detailing forums (since 2004), that Porter Cable moved the manufacturing of the PC from their US plant to a plant they built in Mexico. Are you saying that it has now been moved to China?

EDIT: I did a little searching and found this nugget in a 2007 press release: "With its manufacturing operation centralized in Jackson, Tenn., Porter-Cable operates a second manufacturing facility in Steinheim, Germany, where its products are produced and sold throughout Europe under the FLEX brand name."

But I also found this: "However, Black & Decker's purchase of Porter-Cable in 2005, and then the subsequent buyout of Black & Decker by Stanley in 2009, now means that Porter-Cable tools are being made overseas with Mexico or China being the most common origin. The Jackson, Tenn., plant now functions primarily as a distribution center and currently employs over 3,000 people."

My original PC's say "Made in USA"; for people who have XP's, where were they made?
Interesting pieces of information. Especially the one dated in 2007...I'll have a brand new one here Monday and let you know. Hmmm...weren't we talking about PC building a direct drive unit the other day. lol

Yeah, you never know, that might have only lasted for a year. It sounded more like they were building their standard stuff and badging it as "Flex"; may have been a way for Flex to sell a lower-end product with their name on it. Mike and Nick may know something about this since they have visited the Flex plant.

+100000 on the Porter Cable! Mine has been fine so far, done about 20 corrections.

That is a very interesting piece, and the first time I've seen it.

Would be nice if these tidbits were expounded upon. :props:

My PC 7424. Bought in 2007. Still working perfect as the day I bought it. It's been dropped, cords been put away bent, etc... Also still using the same AG backing plate.

I think these machines are ideal for the hobbyist. The power is appropriate. You never have to worry about it getting hot and burning pads and backing plates. I think PC has their own manufacturing plant and QC inspectors, hence rarely do you hear of a problem with the machine.

Also, listening to the audio book Poorly made in China. Good stuff. This PC was made in Mexico and I think the quality is stellar.

Yes, from what I understand, the PC is made in Mexico and China now. And, yes, it certainly is sad to see the US losing the manufacturing industry. For the record, I have a Griot's and absolutely love the machine and I do not have to worry about the pad stopping. In fact, I'm constantly worried about the pads the machine goes though. Too bad I can't get a comparable warranty on the pads like the DA ;)

My PCxp bought about 2 months ago was made in Mexico...
It has been dropped many times and is going like nothing ever happened.

UPS surprised me and actually delivered mine today!! tracking numbers s aid Monday +1 UPS. It's also made in Mexico. Wife is gone this weekend. Going to have to take it for a test run!! lol

Good luck with the PC, although I doubt you'll need it. Solid machine. Just make sure there is a fiber type washer on your backing plate. After a while mine got stuck on there.

A very true statement. The quality of the product varies directly to the buyer's desire for a quality product - been there, doing it now.
