This is done on a few other boards I belong to. Basically the point of it is to see who really has the experience, and lets new members know who to take advice from.

You've got a little scale next to your user name. The scale is in the form of green dots. The more green dots you have the more "respect" you have. By that I mean the more members that give you positive feedback, the more respect, or dots you have.

Here are some screen shots... (top right)

Go to User CP to see the rep people have left you.

Now the only thing I DONT like about this is you cant see who left you the rep points, and other members cant see anything. All they see is the scale. I would like it if you could see who left you the points, and if other members could see who left the points and why. Instead of just some scale.

I like your ideas for improving it. It seems a bit under-utilized on the other board. The majority of users seem to all have the same one green dot.

They JUST started doing it on that board. Im not necessarily suggesting we do exactly that. But I think it would be helpful to come up with someway to distinguish between members besides just post count.

I think we may be referring to different boards. I meant autopia has been doing it for a while. But now looking at your screen shot I can see it's not autopia.

Anyway, yes, I think if it were implemented well it's a good idea.

Oh, yeah I was talking about a different board. I didnt know Autopia does it.

I think it works better with a smaller board like AG. Larger boards dont tend to use it much.

From what I've seen on other boards, it always just turns into a popularity contest with no real meaning.. JMO.. It's fun for about a week though.

As someone new to the group I would love to see something like years of experience or professional. Several of you do professional detailing as a business or side business. It would be helpful for the new members to know who seek answers from. I just looked at my title it has moved from JR member to member. I still don't know anything.

Autopia has done it, but it isn't working right now I don't think.

I think it would be fun and interesting. I wonder what people would say about me? I also think that it might become a popularity contest with no real meaning. After you have been on the forum for a while you get to know what people have the most skills and experience.

I agree with Gary, it would most likely become a popularity contest.

In theory I think it sounds great.

Only thing is, as has been said before it could/would turn into a popularity contest

Also, it could be used punitively by scorned members who refused to hear the truth or people who have a thin hide and get offended when someone says something they don't want to hear regardless of it's merits

You guys bring up good points.

I know what VPL said about you and Joe!:D

Even though that's a great idea, I think sometimes people might just post to get a lot of posts as well since that's displayed on the board.

I would like to see different grades though. I mean, I think you only need 100 posts to become a senior member. Personally, I think you should have something like 2,000 posts or something to be senior!!!

Couple car forums I'm on, they do that, however lol...people can neg-rep you and start f'n around lol.

A popularity contest is exactly what it should be. Those who dispense good advice and are polite would rate well, those who dispense poor advice and are rude would rate poorly. Then you have the whole other class of people, the internet commandos who brag/lie and come off as asses in general( I have only been on here a couple of weeks, and can already think of at least one of these types). These people would get bashed and exposed accordingly. I think it would be a good thing.

Well we all know I would win so....kinda unfair, I taught everyone here

Haha, then you would get the most rep! I think it could work here. I believe a lot of things can work here that dont work on other boards. We have a different group of people here.

I would mod surfer 's last comment as negative because his post had no relevance to the topic, offered no wisdom and was in a selfish tone. That doesn't mean that he gives bad advice just because he cracks a joke from time to time.

HAHA you got it! Thats why I did it to see if somebody would say that, thats what will happen on the auto forums I'm on...except were more brutal lol, one forum we can pay to randomly ban a member for a set time lol. Somebody hijacks a thread, we neg-rep them lol.
