So, I wanted to see how "tough" a few LSPs were and how they handled water. My gut tells me most sealants act similar and most waxes act similar - and there likely wouldn't be a clear cut winner. I had a piece of glass sitting around that is encased in a frame. I came up with the idea of cleaning it, taping off sections, and applying a few LSPs to see what it would take to remove them and how they handled water side by side.

I applied 5 strips of LSPs (3 waxes / 2 sealants - in 2 different sets) and began seeing how they handled water sprayed on them side by side.

The 5 LSPs I choose where pretty much random, I just grabbed anything: Powerlock, PB EX-P, Natty's Red, Migliore Primo, Naviwax Ultimate, and Souveran.

Out of the five I tested, one blew them all away: Menzerna Powerlock

Powerlock beaded water significantly better than any of the others. In fact, watching it bead it looked like a newly applied coating. The difference was astounding. I tried spraying water and flooding water - the Powerlock was just in a different class as the others.

I only took 2 quick pics of "round 2" which was PL, Natty's, and EX-P:

This is after spraying each several times. Notice the tight beading of PL on the right compared to others. Most of the others behaved similarly, but the PL was the stand out by a mile

EX-P (right), Natty's(middle), PL (left)

Then I flooded the surface with water and laid it flat. Again, the water just hated the PL compared to the others.

Notice how there is no "puddles" on the PL on the far right. It was after laying it flat. While EX-P beat the waxes, it was still miles away from PL.

After that I went to clean this glass and I found something else out very interesting about PL. I wanted to see what it would take to remove it so the water no longer beaded.

First I tried IPA diluted to 25%. Didn't touch it. Them I tried 70% IPA strait - still didn't touch it. Then, I tried rubbing it hard with a MF & 70% IPA. Made zero difference - water beaded like nothing touched it.

What did I try next? Griots Paint Prep rubbed heavy with a MF towel. I figured that had to remove it. Sprayed the water... and .... Nope. Still beaded like crazy. Other LSPs were all long gone by now.

OK. This was getting scary. I mean, it was still beading like it was just applied . The tape line was clearly evident. What to try next? How about Goo Gone? IMHO that will remove anything. Cleaned it with Goo Gone and then IPA. IT WAS STILL BEADING AS NEW. Crazy stuff!

Finally I was able to kill it with some PB's SSR 2.5 polish on a MF towel and polish it off.

I haven't used PowerLock in a while. I had forgotten how crazy good it is. Another thing this test told me was, that if you top PL with a wax, I don't think you should have any worry that something in the wax (oils, emulsifiers, etc...) could remove or do any damage to it (unless its an AIO or cleaner wax). I'm convinced PL will hold under that wax for sure.

Something else I found interesting was, I only let the product "cure" about 40 minutes before starting this torture test. This is good to know, as if I'm going to use this product as a base and top it with a wax, I pretty much know it "cures"/hardens pretty quick.

Anyone out there that has Powerlock on their shelf, I encourage you to do a quick comparison of your own and see what you come up with.

I plan on comparing PL to Wolfgang, Blackfire, and Lava sealants in the near future.

What do you think?

Very nice testing results. I'm looking forward in your future comparison with other sealants. Thanks for sharing this.

PL is one of my favorite LSP's. I'm glad to see that it's a tough sealant.

I don't have PL but use menzerna polishes and really like them. I'm wondering how PL would work on a windshield maybe half PL and the other half ?????. or the drivers side window that gets rolled up and down half PL and half ????? and see how they work over time.

I like it. Using it on that glass seems cool too.:xyxthumbs:

I'd love to see WGDGPS 3.0 in the next one.

Cool. Powerlock Will be the next liquid Lsp I buy. Reading this tipped me over the fence. Thanks!:xyxthumbs:

I love that Menzerna Powerlock Been using it ever since AG started selling it..

Menzerna Power Lock is an awesome product!

Thanks for the comparison and test results...:props:

Thanks for the test! I wonder if sealants bond to glass better than paint.....hmmm. In any case I'm looking foward to trying Menzerna sealants in the future.

Thanks for this I already planed on ordering it. I am going to do power lock and color lock on a black mustang. I had great looks but horrible durability with BL/v7 on that car. Now I am excited about trying power lock, knowing its going to last longer then 3 weeks

great sealant, easy to use, and durable as noted.

I don't think it matters much if its paint or glass. I though of that also. As all the other products behaved normally like I expected.

I'll be using PL under wax in the future.

Nice comparison test.

Would like to see a torture test of PL and WGDGPS if you get to it.

I'll be doing those 2 and BF in the near future. I didn't do the test to see if PL was better than the others. I just did it to see how they compare.

When I saw how PL handled water and what it took to remove it next to the others, I was as surprised as anyone.

Thanks for the LSP-comparison-test!! :props:

(It's been awhile since I've heard the words: Menzerna Powerlock...mentioned.
I always thought it was an excellent all-synthetic sealant.)

In my experience...
Sealants, due to their inherent higher fracture-points, are longer lasting than most waxes.
If sealants are allowed their stated cure-times to achieve complete cross-linking,
this above characteristic is said to be more readily assured.

However...
It has also been said that a very large % (75-80%?) of sealants' cross-linking/curing occurs
within the first 30 minutes of the: Application and removal<<<if necessary...process(es).
The remaining % continues to cross-link/cure over the next 12-24 hours, at a more reduced rate.

Note:
I've never seen/heard the official Menzerna recommended cure-time for Powerlock.

-Since you started your "torture test" after allowing only 40 minutes of cure-time for PL...
With the seemingly unexpected results you have graciously provided...

I now wonder if: "cure-times" may be a little overrated/exaggerated?!?!

Also:
I would have no qualms 'topping' Menz PL with a pure finishing-wax after a 1/2 hour or so.
Afterall...~75% of PL has already cured.
The finishing-wax should be providing 'some' additional sacrificial-barrier protection.
(At least it would seem so.)

Question/Just thinking out loud:
Will a sealant continue cross-linking/curing while being
covered with a film-layer of a finishing-wax...Or not?

Thanks again for an eye-opener of a test.

:)

I am along the same lines of thought. If this were a painted, metalic panel I am pretty sure the results would be different.

I've used PL and loved the easy of application and removal. I do have to confess that there are two things I did not like with it:

1) smell
2) cure time between coats (3hrs)

I want it to me my "go to", but unless I have a car staying overnight it is a pain to layer.

I was set to get my hands on a panel (only have room for a small trunk).. I was all set to go get one, when I saw junk yards are changing over $100 for one.

Maybe I'll trash pick one out of a body shop trash.

I really had not noticed that PL was much different in that area compared to WGDPS or BFWD. I think I need to do a test myself.

Nice I got the pl as well. Time for cross linking with this product is a must! I thought it was sweet and I applied a wax to top off the pl after 2 hours! The water on my paint was making no type of beading after 1.5months! Lol. User error on my behalf. I'll do it right next time.

Gotta love some dumpster diving!!!Im the MAN

I haven't used my pl in a while since I've been spoiled by wowa type sealants like blackfire crystal seal. The last time I used I did a torture test and it lasted for 5 months with only monthly washes with ONR.
