Mike? My wonderful wife took my suggestion for Christmas to purchase your detailing book and DVD combo. ( I really appreciate the content! )

I have 2 Black GM Products 04 Silverado 06 Z51 Vert Vette. Both are about 3's to 4's (yes to Swirls) and stay mostly indoors.

I'm gonna invest a substantial to me amount of $ soon in supplies and tools. Didn't have the book or knowledge at your huge Quick Sale at Christmas.

My question is - in your opinion does Meguires stock their inexpensive Walmart < $20 Clay Kits with Ultra fine or Fine Clay Bars? I clearly do not want to try an aggressive product for my first time with Clay. I also need to stay a little frugal too for a few months.

Thank you for any insight. (Love your charts for product comparisons on abrasives and polishes and waxes / sealants and pads)

I have read here that the megs smooth surface clay kit is more of a fine clay. I know that it's more aggressive than for instance pinnacle ultra fine. I used the megs my first time, on a medium gray car, and had no troubles. It worked very well and left no marks. Just use plenty of lube. Mothers clay is supposed to be a little finer than Megs, but less durable I've heard. I've used the Megs twice now and would gladly use it again.

I have only used Megs smooth surface clay on many vehicles including my 10 GT500 and have never had an issue or problem. It worked very well IMO and that is why I have stuck with it.

i also use megs ss clay on my cars with great results and no issues

Meguiar's white clay is even finer than blue clay from their pro line or other brands (all same patent blue clay).

I use Megs clay as well and have not had any issues with it. You shouldn't need to clay the cars often if they stay in the garage for the most part.

The kit is also a 'good deal', you get clay, botttle of QD, an MF Towel and a little container of wax (right now [I think] it is Megs Ultimate Quik Wax).

Looks like they've gone back to the cleaner wax rather than UQW in the kit. On the bright side though, they've upped the clay to two 80 gram bars (used to be two 50 gram bars) - which makes the Smooth Surface Clay Bar Replacement Pack absolutely useless, as that contains less clay (three 50 gram bars) for the same price.

I've used the Meg's clay kit and the Mother's Clay kit. I have found that I like the Meg's clay kit better than Mother's, and have found it to be alittle more aggresive than Mothers. Overall its a great product. I plan on picking up the 3 pack and use ONR or DP Rinseless Wash & Gloss as a clay lube.

Don't! See my post above, just get the kit - it's been changed to include a total of 160 grams of clay (two 80 gram bars), more clay than the 3-pack (which is only three x 50 grams = 150 grams), at the same price - plus a towel, QD and cleaner wax, essentially for free :D

Can you confirm this? I only ask because i just picked up this kit the other day since I needed more clay and it came with the small bottle of Ultimate Quik Wax

Can't say for sure, I'm only basing on the description on AG:

Here’s what you get in the Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Kit:

Two 80 gram Meguiars Clay Bars
Each clay bar is 80 grams. This is a nonabrasive clay that works on any paint finish, especially clear coats. Each bar is individually wrapped and packaged in a reusable plastic case. When you store your clay, mist it with Quik Detailer to keep it fresh.

16 oz. Meguiars Quik Detailer
Meguiars Quik Detailer is full of lubricants that provide a slick barrier between the clay and the paint surface. The clay glides easily across the wet surface without scratching. Even delicate clear coat finishes are safe as long as the paint is well-lubricated. Plus, Quik Detailer can be used to remove any clay residue and it leaves the paint smooth and glossy.

4 oz. Sample of Meguiars Cleaner Wax
Meguiars Cleaner Wax is a versatile, one-step product that cleans the paint surface as it bonds to create a shiny layer of protection. The gentle cleaners eliminate the mild oxidation that is common with daily drivers. Used after clay, Meguiars Cleaner Wax is sure to leave a slick, glossy shine.

16 x 24 Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel
The Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel is made with a deep, dual-sided nap that wipes away wax while rendering a smooth, mirror-like shine. The fabric is pre-washed prior to being hemmed to give it maximum absorbency right out of the package. The thirsty fibers can absorb three times more water as a terry cloth towel and microfiber is softer, too!

Did you get it from a local store? Maybe they haven't gotten the new stock in yet - as far as I know, the kit used to include the small UQW bottle and the two 50 grams clay bars - they seem to have changed it to the 80 gram bars and the cleaner wax for 2012.

The old Kit is used to come with 4oz Cleaner Wax (before 2011)

According to Michael Stoops of MOL, Meguiar's updated the clay kit in 2011 to come with:
2x80g of white clay
16oz QD
6oz UQW
Supreme Shine MF towel (same as before)

So can anyone check what is actually going on with that kit?
Either Meguiar's make a different kit for the same product code (which is unlikely),
or they decided to change back to Cleaner Wax starting from 2012 quietly,
or I think some online merchants messed up with the photos and description of the clay kit?

I found that Autogeek, Amazon, and Meguiarsdirect.com (what the!?) are giving confusing information on this. They either show confusing photos or contents. Walmart.com is showing the right pic for new kit and says 6oz UQW.

BTW the product should look like this:

:wow:

Nevermind, I just posted in Meguiarsonline.com. Hopefully Meguiar's staff can clarify on this.

I can confirm that i bought the box pictured above. it had both the upgraded amount of clay and UQW. Maybe different sellers have different products?

My last purchase of this clay kit included Meg's UQW and not cleaner wax. If you look on the photo, the side of the box looks like it has the cleaner wax instead of the black UQW bottle. If that's the case, maybe the contents are updated, but the box is not. Easy enough if you are buying OTC...just open it up. Online may be a little more challenging.

RhetoricMixes,

Thanks for the confirm. Where did you buy the kit?

I just get a reply in the Meguiarsonline.com forum.
They told me that the new kit come with 2x80g clay as well as UQW.
So it is either 2x50 + Cleaner Wax, or 2x80 + UQW.
There is no such thing as big clay + cleaner wax kit.

You might want to make sure you are getting the new box before you place an order online or check carefully if you are buying locally.

woooohooo - this thread grew legs... Thanks for all responses! I've been trolling as much as possible around this site and autogeek.com too looking at clay info and packages.

Yes it seems Pinnacle is Ultra fine and not abbrasive enough for my first clay ever on 6+ year old vehicles. I saw the Meg kits, including Aggressive and seemingly fine clays on AG. Thought Kits should fall in middle?

Thanks for comparo's between Mom and Meg!

Thanks for other hints and tips too!!!!

PC DA should arrive today - along with a plethora of polishing items including 5.5" pads and twins from Pinnacle and Wolfgang. Sealer from Wolfgang coming too. I'd like to use Rejex in mix at some point. I do not have extreme desire to cover all with 'wax' as I also have several Motorcycles to keep up. Life is good.

Saw your post on MOL PPLd - thanks for helping clear that up, looks like AG needs to update their product description.

The order of the three Meg's clays, from least to most aggressive, are the smooth surface clay (grey), the professional mild clay (blue), and the professional aggressive clay (red) :).
