Microfiber Crazy

junkman: towel scratches cd = towel scratches paint

cm8 6mt: towel doesn't scratch cd = towel can still possibly scratch paint

Two sides of the same coin, and I think both are right.

:iagree:

Junkman's technique for finding swirls is excellent (but I guess he knows that). However that's not to say this is the only good way to find swirls. I also agree with cm8 6mt's notion that although a cheap MF may not scratch a CD but may scratch paint. As I read in an earlier post for the money we spend on this craft, yes we should try to use the best MF we could. After putting in all that work doing paint correction to use a cheap MF on paint is like having a Bentley and trying to go to Auto Zone for parts.

Here here! :)

Thing is... we've sold our manufacturing to CHEAP outsourced labor in every corner of the world. Even the Zaino towels are manufactured in Korea. ;) Not so terribly different than China. I find it a little funny that with all the talk of NOTHING touching your car, inside or out, other than microfiber, that the Zaino blondes (from what I can tell) are 100% cotton. :) Myself, I'd LOVE to only have cotton. My wife would be the happiest person on EARTH because she can't STAND microfiber! Her hands are all cut up and rough from handling thousands upon thousands of papers a day and MF towels make her skin crawl! ;)

I remember in the 90's when the us CAFE standards were cracking down on fleet fuel economy. The US manufacturers had in no way figured out how to keep making huge V8 cars that get European 2 liter fuel economy. The 'out' as it may.... was that IF a vehicle had more than a certain percentage of its parts made outside the borders of the US then THAT vehicle DID NOT have to fall under the US CAFE standards.

One of the darlings of the industry was the Ford Crown Victoria. I mean all the big families drove one, and literally every government agency had a whole fleet, (still does). So how in the world did they keep selling that big V8 gas hog when it fell well outside the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards? Well by outsourcing so many parts that it qualified as an 'import'. They even shifted manufacturing to Mexico just to make sure! True story.

Remember when Wal-Mart was on a "Made in the USA" campaign? Going into small towns and putting dozens of local businesses out of business they acted like it was all a good thing, and had "Made in the USA" banners all over the store. Now days you'll search high and low to find ANYTHING with such a label!!!

Having a product made in China doesn't have to mean it's inferior. Although... all to often that IS what it means. They have invested in and built some of the most advanced manufacturing plants on the planet, and are capable of making the finest products anywhere. At the same time, they can offer cost that lures retailers away from *quality* and more towards *profit*.

Take for instance if you can buy a 600gsm MF towel at $1.25 in China and another at $2.45 in Korea, or even yet another one for $6.00 made in Korea which one would you buy? How would you know one is any better than the other? Assuming that the raw materials came from the same place, are manufactured to the same specification, then all *should* be the same product. (SHOULD being the operative word.) :dunno:

Whenever I read your post I think to myself 'great minds think alike'. You are right on so many levels. 'Made in china' for some reason over the years has become a benchmark for cheaply made. However, that could be so untrue. As proud as Americans we like to be (and we often equate American made to quality) what do we say when some of our products are inferior to product of other countries). If you look at the labels on some MF towels that may say something like 'materials from Korea, assembled in the US and manufactured in china. Or something like that. I guess we have NAFTA to thank for it.

That is so interesting what they did with the Crown Vic.

BTW: How's Mike

So incorrect you are sir. Although Zaino uses materials that come from outside the US, the Borderless Blond towels are assembled here in the USA. It's the assembly process that can make or break the quality of a towel and yes, they are 100% cotton. That's the scoop straight from Sal Zaino himself as I was curious enough to pick up the phone and speak with him about those particular towels not too long ago. Those are the towels that I use and definitely recommend.

One thing about made in China junk. Someone who knows in every industry will tell you that the junk saturating their industry most likely is China made. eBay is beginning to get overrun by that crap.

I can definitely speak for telling the difference with microfiber and it is touch. You can definitely feel the difference between the cheap crap and the quality ones coming out of Korea. The assembly process has a lot to do with it.

I look at it like the manufacturing of chocolate chip cookies. Keebler, Famous Amos and Nestlie all make chocolate chip cookies that contain flour, sugar and chocolate chips. Now I'm sure that they don't make their own flour, sugar or chocolate chips, they probably get those base products from the same place. So why don't their cookies all taste the same? Because of what they do during the manufacturing process. They are obviously not doing the same EXACT thing.

Junkman,

First I just wanna' say... I hear ya', I understand what you're saying. I also understand OCD when I "see" it. ;) Seriously... you PAINT the front of your Vette EVERY FREAKING YEAR because of rock chips? WOW! I'm not a painter, but maybe a high solids would be worth a look. :dunno:

Big props to you brother for being able to thrash that sucker on the high banks of AMS annually. That is seriously cool dude. :dblthumb2: (Right in my back door practically.) Tons of fun to drive that track for sure!

I don't know if fun is the best way to describe it. After my first stick around that track, I was completely addicted. To get the opportunity to drive my car the way it was designed to be driven in a LEGAL and safe environment is better than sex, and I love me some sex. But don't take my word for it, watch me do it!

Hey cardaddy I read your post (before edit) about painting with DuPont Imron. Geez how old are you lol. I remember when Imron finally made it to the bodyshops around 1977. It changed everything as far as gloss and durability. I was painting 18 wheel trucks at the time and I'm sure you remember all the crazy mulit color stripes on those rigs. It was one color a day hanging off a 12 ft ladder using the longest spray stroke you could muster! I still have an almost full 20+ year old gallon on the paint shelf that's still good! To spray Imron I used the Cadillac of paint guns in the day... a Binks #7. That was an awesome combo as the Binks could really siphon and at 60 PSI the booth would be a (dangerous) cloud of Imron. You could lay it on real wet and the catalyst (activator) would cook the paint before it would slide leaving an incredible shiny slick finish!

Junkman I've seen those vids of the vette at AMS and your commentary was fun to listen... felt like we were riding right along. I've driven a Buick GN of a friends at CMS. The day after Thanksgiving if you spend $50+ on souvenirs at the track they let you have three laps. Man hitting that banking the first time was like  what a blast!

What paint system do you use re-spraying the Corvette's front end?

One question for you why don't you just clear bra the front bumper rather than painting all the time?

Look at that video I posted of me on the track. Those rocks are hitting my paint at 100-130+Mph. That is easily going to damage a clear bra and the clear bra is going to look like crap after that weekend. Now I could remove the clear bra and apply it again but I don't know how to apply a clear bra. Thus, I have got to pay someone around $800 minimum to have a new clear bra installed. OR, I could buy the painting supplies that I need and paint the bumper myself for a LOT less money. Thus, it's significantly cheaper for me to paint than to have a clear bra reinstalled.

Lastly, I never have been real keen on having a clear bra on my car because if you look close enough, you can see it. I'm just not a fan. I did buy a real bra a few years ago. Had it custom made and I have yet to put it on the car. Don't ask me why... :(

What line of ppg so you use?

Deltron or Nexa Autocolor 2K, which ever line is the cheapest between the two at the time. I've also used the Global Refinish System so I'm not real particular between the three. It's going to get painted again within 12 months so I just go with whatever has the best price at the time.

Any towel used the wrong way can mar paint but a generalization like all Chinese made microfiber will harm paint is just an opinion - not a fact.

Junkman, are you gonna do any seminars in the Northeast?

Junkman, are you gonna do any seminars in the Northeast?

Only if someone is footing the bill. :D

I've done a rash of private clinics. It seems that the car clubs bringing me in don't want to share with the public.

That's too bad. BTW I got those boarderless blonds, they are soft. I might get some more before they run out. I'd recommend them to anyone.

How old am I...? Look in the dictionary under DIRT, right next to that... there's a picture of ME! Im the MAN
Put it this way, we got married in 77 and were not teenagers (just barely). ;)

Not only the multi-color stripes but how about the murals on the trailers??????? Oh yeah! I lived just a few miles from a huge truck depot area. I mean, most every long haul freight line had a depot up and down the highway there. I really don't remember how many different ones, but it was at least 18~20 names you recognize.

Lots and lots of trucks in the area. Used to CB with them and had a few long haul trucker friends back then. Me and the wife almost bought a rig as a matter of fact. :D Breaker breaker 1-9, as I keyed my 750 watt tube powered linear under my seat, (That'd heat up the freaking seat!) At night on a clear day you could talk to CUBA! Talked west to the Rockies when we went up to a little hill locally. ;)

Went to Costco yesterday and noticed the typical bundle of Eurows are now replaced with Kirkland Signature microfibers...

Have you gents seen/tried them?

I gave it a quick feel and the towel felt a little rougher.

I'm sure you'll find the Eurows on ebay.

Thank you my friend, but I think I'm done with mf this year.

Didn't realize I have 132 mf sitting in the closet! Wow, I don't even want to think of the amount spent...
